About the Program

Higher Ground Youth and Family Services provides after-school programming for elementary and secondary students in Anaheim, California. Many of the students served come from under-resourced communities and benefit from individualized academic support that supplements their school-day learning. Through this partnership, Chapman University students will be placed as tutors within the after-school program to provide homework help, academic enrichment, and mentoring. The program aims to improve academic outcomes for K-12 students while providing Chapman undergraduates with valuable pre-professional experience in education and youth development.

Position Summary

Support day-to-day delivery of After School and mentorship programming by assisting program staff with activity facilitation, homework help, attendance tracking, and positive youth engagement. This position supports community residents by helping maintain welcoming spaces and strengthen programs that respond to community needs. Through this work, the role will help unsure that essential services and resources are accessible and contribute to residents’ quality of life.

Responsibilities

• Assist Youth Program staff with daily activity setup, facilitation, and cleanup.
• Provide one-on-one and small-group academic and homework support.
• Support attendance and behavior log data entry in the Pillar 1 tracking system.
• Build positive, consistent mentoring relationships with youth participants.
• Help maintain a safe, structured, and encouraging environment.
• Assist with program enrichment activities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled Chapman University student receiving a Federal Work-Study award.
• Comfortable working with youth ages 6 to 17.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, not required.
• Must have reliable source of transportation.

Program Hours

Monday through Friday, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (after-school program hours).

Scheduling is flexible within this window — partial availability (for example, 2 to 3 days per week) is welcome; students do not need to cover all five days.

Desired Qualifications

• Spanish language proficiency — bilingual Spanish/English tutors are highly needed to serve the Anaheim community.
• Strong math skills — math tutors are in particularly high demand across grade levels.
• Education major, minor, or coursework in education, child development, psychology,
• social work, or related fields.
• Prior experience tutoring, mentoring, teaching, or working with children or adolescents.
• Experience working with diverse populations including English language learners.
• Experience or coursework in culturally responsive teaching or equity in education.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Knowledge of elementary or secondary school curriculum and standards.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Must have FWS and complete a Live Scan.

Live Scan (DOJ) background clearance, TB clearance, and completion of Higher Ground’s youth safety orientation are required prior to the first shift.
