Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating gardening-based curriculum both in the classroom and community-based organizations while coordinating volunteer assistance.

Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conducts curriculum enrichment in schools and community-based organizations related to gardening and nutrition.
• Uses approved curricula and identifies teaching strategies that promote Earth Kind gardening techniques among program participants.
• Facilitates and collects pre and post surveys to evaluate and interpret program efficacy.
• Recruits, trains and supports educators and volunteers to strengthen programming efforts.
• Organizes, participates, and assists volunteers in planning community-based activities/events that support overall goals and objectives.
• Seeks program support through donations, grants, and sponsorships
• Assists in fulfilling objectives of grant funded programs.
• Coordinates programming with County Extension Agents to develop a comprehensive approach to gardening education.
• Supports the overall 4-H and Youth Development Program through youth outreach.
• Promotes the Horticulture youth and adult programs through social media outlets and the Youth Gardens Program Blog
• Follows detailed, annual program plans.
• Completes required weekly, monthly, and annual program reports.
• Participates in professional development training activities.
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science, Environmental Sciences, Social/Behavioral Science or Education, or closely related field and two (2) years working on youth-related programs; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Good knowledge of program administration; knowledge of teaching techniques; knowledge of basic agricultural and horticultural principles.
• Skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; skill in coordinating multiple projects simultaneously; skill in organizing, compiling and recording information accurately; skill in utilizing word processing, database or spreadsheet software packages.
• Ability to supervise youth, youth offenders and/or volunteers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with youth, youth offenders, volunteers, co-workers, as well as outside agencies and organizations.
• Must have a valid driver's license and motor vehicle liability insurance, personal injury protection insurance and a personal vehicle.
• Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance.
• Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test.
• May be required to work more than 40 hours during the work week.

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

• Working conditions are in and outside of an office environment.
• May be exposed to varying temperatures and outdoor conditions.
• Occasionally moves items weighing up to 25 to 50 pounds.
• May be required to operate small machinery for gardening and urban farming purposes.
• Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
• Positions self to perform essential functions.
• Must be able to be mobile for hours at a time.
