Job Description

Work Location: Gilroy Hours: M,T,Th,F - 3pm-5:30pm and Saturdays 9am-2pm

This position is under the direction of the Youth & Family Program Specialist of the Northwest YMCA. The Youth Fitness Instructor is responsible for working with the other youth fitness staff to provide a healthy, active, and fun environment. The instructor will lead structured fitness classes for children (parents may or may not be involved). This position is considered to have a supervisory or disciplinary relationship over minors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan and facilitate age-appropriate youth fitness classes for children and parents.
  • Create a fun, developmentally appropriate, engaging class that focuses on motor-development, strength, balance, endurance, social growth, and challenges youth cognitively.
  • Follow the class curriculum and help design additional activities; Build relationships with parents and children; facilitate relationships between children in the class.
  • Be aware of and implement YMCA strategic and branch goals surrounding Youth Development, Healthy Living, Member Experience, and Social Responsibility.
  • Act as role model and mentor to department staff and volunteers.
  • Uphold and enforce all branch and YMCA of Silicon Valley policies and procedures.

The physical demands of the position include:

  • Visual and auditory ability to observe and to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

A commitment to the YMCA mission and its core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring, as well as a commitment to building developmental assets in youth.

  • Value diversity, youth, and have a broad vision of health and wellness that is enhanced by relationship building.
  • Prior experience teaching children or experience in fitness or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to relate well to both children and parents/guardians.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid, or certified within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete Child Abuse Prevention & New Staff Orientation within 30 days of hire.


SALARY RANGE: $20.00 - $23.00/Hour
