Job Description

The Youth Crew Members are outdoors, conservation, trail building, or other skilled trades profession enthusiast, focusing on work experience, job readiness skills, and exposure to various outdoor skilled trades. Youth Crew Members will have the opportunity to work together to complete trail projects and participate in skilled trade learning workshops. Members will be introduced to trail building and maintenance, forestry, carpentry, masonry, construction, and more.

  1. Full participation in all projects and trades workshops.
  2. Uses traditional trail skills, restoration techniques, carpentry skills, and physical labor including the use of hand tools while working cooperatively with crew members to complete an array of projects across the Park District, including trail construction and maintenance, building rock stairs, carpentry, invasive vegetation removal, and restoration of impacted sites.
  3. Cleaning, maintaining, and organizing tools, equipment, and the worksite.
  4. Models proper safety practices, respectful behavior, and professionalism.
  5. Completes training and adheres to Cleveland Metroparks trails standards, practices, and expectations.
  6. Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  7. Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  8. Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.

Qualifications

  • No experience is necessary, but the ideal candidate possesses an interest in conservation, working outdoors, trail building or other skilled trades profession.
  • Must be 16 years or older before the start of the program.
  • Must be a current high school student, or recent graduate within the past year.
  • Must provide a birth certificate or passport and a letter of consent from a parent or legal guardian
  • Ability to perform manual and physical labor in both wilderness and non-wilderness settings, while sometimes carrying work supplies or hiking up to 3 miles.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, must be available to work a flexible work schedule.

Work Location: This position reports to Astorhurst Building in Bedford Reservation.
