Job Summary
The Youth Coordinator plans and facilitates a safe, engaging, and supportive after-school program for children and youth living in affordable housing communities. Working approximately 10 hours per week, the Youth Coordinator creates a positive environment that promotes academic success, social-emotional development, life skills, and community engagement while building positive relationships with youth, families, volunteers, and community partners.
Responsibilities
- Plan and facilitate engaging after-school activities for school-aged children and youth.
- Provide homework assistance and support educational enrichment activities.
- Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment that encourages positive youth development.
- Implement age-appropriate recreational, social-emotional learning, and life skills activities.
- Maintain attendance records and complete required program documentation.
- Communicate with parents, caregivers, property management, and Community Impact staff as appropriate.
- Prepare activity materials and maintain an organized program space.
- Support community events and family engagement activities as assigned.
- Ensure program activities comply with organizational policies and safety procedures.
- Represent the organization in a professional and positive manner while serving as a role model for youth.
Candidate Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to successfully pass all required background clearances, including DOJ/FBI fingerprinting, prior to working with youth.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Reliable transportation to travel to assigned program locations.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and participate in indoor and outdoor youth activities.
Experience
- Experience working with children or youth in an educational, recreational, childcare, or community-based setting preferred.
- Experience facilitating group activities, homework assistance, or enrichment programs preferred.
- Experience working with culturally diverse populations and families is desirable.
- Experience working in affordable housing, nonprofit, or community-based programs is a plus.
Skills
- Bilingual fluency in English and a second language preferred
- Ability to establish positive, supportive relationships with children, youth, and families.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate engaging youth activities.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, email, and virtual communication platforms.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment. Able to use a personal computer, including word processing and spreadsheet software
- Able to work cooperatively as a member of a housing team (with resident services and property management) and accept supervision and training
- Possess a valid California Driving License, a good driving record and a vehicle with a current registration and insurance
- Available for occasional evening and weekend meetings and special events with residents as needed
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily at program sites and community spaces within housing communities
- May require occasional local travel between sites
- Will occasionally be required to work outdoors during events or community activities
- Exposure to noise typical in group settings involving children or youth
- Must be comfortable working in multicultural and socioeconomically diverse environments
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of supplies or equipment
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching during program set-up, facilitation, and clean-up
- Ability to sit for extended periods while assisting with homework or administrative tasks
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and to interact with program participants
