JOB TITLE: Youth Alternatives Diversion

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

SUPERVISOR: Youth Alternatives Director, Assistant Director, Diversion Coordinator,

SALARY: $48,096 to $57,715 Annually

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

To assist with the coordination of Juvenile Diversion Services through the District Attorney’s Office and assist the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing the activities and operations of the Juvenile Diversion Program with the partnership of Youth Alternatives (a criminal justice agency); to assist with the coordination of assigned activities with other outside agencies; and to provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete assignments and projects assigned by the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator and Director; enforce rules, regulations, and policies established by the department and the City. Provide responsible staff assistance to the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator and Youth Alternatives Director.
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Juvenile Diversion Program through the District Attorney’s Office under the guidance of the District Attorney.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities related to the Juvenile Diversion Program as directed by the District Attorney.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs; recommend appropriate service and staffing levels.
  • Assist with the management of all services and activities of assigned programs with Youth Alternatives.
  • Provide court supervision, counseling, and emergency services and support to the youth and their families who are participating in the Juvenile Diversion Program; serve as advocate for clients in schools, courts, and the legal system; maintain accurate client records.
  • Serve as liaison for the District Attorney/Youth Alternatives with other departments, divisions, and outside agencies to include the Municipal and Circuit Courts.
  • To work directly with youth and families who have been offered the Juvenile Diversion Program to reduce truancy and dropout rates in the Laramie County School District.
  • To aid in the prevention of out-of-control behavior through the coordination of services to youth and families participating in the Juvenile Diversion Program, thereby reducing the number of youth entering the Juvenile Justice System.
  • To monitor the progress of the youth and families participating in the Juvenile Diversion Program.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with public relations work and prepare program publications; aid with special events; direct calls, questions, and concerns from the schools as well as the youth and families participating in the program.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings and various committee meetings; make presentations to schools, committees, and parent meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of Juvenile Justice, Family Counseling, and Juvenile Prevention.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Operational characteristics, services, and activities of the Juvenile Justice System.
  • Management skills to analyze programs, policies, and operational needs.
  • Principles and practices of program development and administration.
  • Counseling theories and techniques related to youth and families.
  • Basic statistical procedures.
  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Operation of computers and familiarity with software applications.
  • Assist the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator in the operations, services, and activities of Youth Alternatives programs.
  • Develop and administer program goals, objectives, and procedures.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Interpret and explain Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

  • One (1) to two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in juvenile justice or closely related field.
  • Applicant must be able to pass a complete criminal background check which includes fingerprinting and the child abuse registry.

Preferred

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in counseling, psychology, sociology, juvenile justice, or closely related field of study.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
