GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The primary responsibility for this position is the management and oversight of the Wyoming State Museum. The position has supervisory responsibility for the museum staff, is responsible for the management and maintenance of the State’s museum collections, oversees all exhibit space within the museum and the collections warehouse, is responsible for providing outreach to the State’s museum community, as well as providing regular public outreach and education, and is responsible for the administration of the State Museum’s annual budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Oversee all State Museum functions and activities.
  • Ensure the State Museum is operational and actively providing museum visitors with a high-quality experience.
  • Ensure high-quality public outreach and education is accomplished regularly through exhibits and programming.
  • Develop and ensure compliance with the State Museum strategic plan and mission.
  • Direct the State Museum staff in the effective performance of their job duties through conducting personnel actions and meeting with staff regularly to discuss issues, set goals, monitor progress, and accomplish the State Museum mission and strategic plan.
  • Administer the biennial budget for the State Museum and any associated grants or funding.
  • Assist the Agency Deputy Director in the preparation and reporting of the biennial State Museum budget and supplemental budgets, regularly monitoring budget and ensuring appropriate expenditure of State and all other funding sources.
  • Ensure compliance with all fiscal policies, rules, regulations and reporting requirements related to all State Museum funding sources.

Examples of duties

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants with a Masters Degree in Museum Science or a closely related field plus three (3) to five (5) years of experience in museum work, exhibit design, or public outreach.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of museum and curation practices, including exhibit preparation and curation techniques.
  • Skill in organizing museum programs and education as well as a strong commitment to public service.
  • Knowledge and ability in personnel management. Ability to provide leadership to employees. Skill in establishing and monitoring staff work priorities and in resolving conflicts between and among employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with constituents and with local, state and federal entities.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to relate and communicate effectively with key stakeholders including elected officials, government officials at all jurisdictional levels and the state Executive branch. Strong public speaking and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal policies and procedures. Knowledge of Government accounting, contracting and financial management procedures. Ability to read and interpret program rules and policies.
  • Ability and willingness to work with elected officials and provide information both written and verbally in committee meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Cultural Resources)

Experience:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Cultural Resources) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Cultural Resources Supervisor

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

5-7 years of progressive work experience (typically in Cultural Resources) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Cultural Resources Supervisor

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is completed mostly indoors. Some travel is required.
