The W/WW Crew Leader leads the maintenance, construction, and continuous improvement of the City’s water and wastewater infrastructure to ensure reliable, safe, and compliant service delivery. The position oversees technical operations, diagnoses and resolves system issues, and ensures adherence to regulatory and safety standards. By guiding field crews and managing project documentation, this role supports the long-term sustainability and efficiency of essential municipal systems.

  • Leads and oversees daily work of utility crews, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates routine and emergency field operations, adjusting priorities as needed to meet service demands.
  • Provides supervision, training, and performance feedback to crew members, fostering a productive and safety-focused work environment.
  • Participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater infrastructure, including mains, valves, meters, hydrants, and monitoring equipment.
  • Utilizes field technology such as GPS, GIS, and CCTV inspection tools to document infrastructure conditions and support system updates.
  • Oversees and supports utility locating, leak detection, and condition assessments to ensure system integrity and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinates with contractors, engineers, and internal departments on capital improvement projects, system upgrades, and service interruptions.
  • Manages work order systems, procurement processes, and maintenance records to ensure accurate documentation and efficient resource use.
  • Monitors project budgets, reviews invoices, and ensures timely ordering and tracking of materials and supplies.
  • Participates in safety programs, training, and interdepartmental collaboration to support continuous improvement and service excellence.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Five (5) years of water/wastewater maintenance experience, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Level II Wastewater Collections, and or Class C Water Distribution certifications. Out of state reciprocation will be evaluated.
  • A Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to respond within one (1) hour for emergency calls.
  • Required to perform after hours standby duties.

Supplemental information

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of how to read and comprehend blueprints and routine maintenance documentation to ensure accurate execution of work tasks.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to maintain effective and positive working relationships with City staff, vendors, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to lift up to 80 pounds occasionally. Subject to vision constantly; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity and hearing frequently; sitting, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, talking and foot controls occasionally; crawling rarely.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions involve occasional exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, open trenches, confined spaces, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases. Utilizes confined space equipment or other personal protective equipment as required.
