Established in 1979, Western Sydney MRC (WSMRC) Ltd is a for purpose, place-based, community organisation serving migrant and refugee communities in Southwest Sydney and the Macarthur Region. We provide a range of services and tailored support to ensure that all individuals who come to Australia to start a new life feel respected and valued as Australian community members, and have access to the support they need to reach their full potential.

Our work is driven by our community and our Board plays a vital role in ensuring we remain a strong, sustainable, and impactful organisation.

Our objective is to:

• Deliver responsive, culturally appropriate services that reflect the strengths, needs and aspirations of local communities
• Promote access, equity and inclusion for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
• Identify and respond to the needs of communities experiencing disadvantage, strengthening connection, participation and opportunity.

The Opportunity

We are seeking passionate, skilled, and community-minded individuals to join the WSMRC Board as Non-Executive Directors. This is a voluntary leadership role for people who want to make a real difference in the lives of some of Australia's most vulnerable and resilient communities. As a Non-Executive Director, you will contribute your expertise to the strategic direction, governance, and oversight of WSMRC helping us grow our impact across Western Sydney.

The Board of Western Sydney MRC operates with a strategic focus, placing emphasis on leadership, strategy, and policy, rather than day-to-day operations and activities. The board's efforts are concentrated on guiding the organisation's overall direction and community impact.

What You'll Do

As a Non-Executive Director, you will:

• Contribute to the strategic direction and long-term sustainability of WSMRC
• Provide governance oversight in accordance with ACNC standards and director duties
• Support sound financial management and risk oversight
• Champion the interests of the communities WSMRC serves
• Participate in board meetings (approximately 6–8 per year) and relevant sub-committees
• Act as an ambassador for WSMRC within your professional and community networks

Who We're Looking For:

Essential expertise required

We are actively seeking board members with a proven track record of experience in governance, either through current board roles or with credentials in one or more of the following key areas:

• Financial management: Reads budgets, financial reports and audits; asks clear questions about sustainability and accountability.
• Strategy development and assessment: Helps shape strategy and checks progress against community need, funding realities and sector change.
• Corporate governance: Understands director duties, good governance, board roles, ACNC obligations and committee structures.
• Risk management: Identifies key risks and supports practical oversight of mitigation, compliance and organisational resilience.
• Collaborative decision-making: Works respectfully with directors and executives, encourages debate and supports collective board decisions.
• Critical and innovative thinking: Uses independent judgement, challenges assumptions constructively and is open to better ways of working.
• Commitment: Shows commitment to WSMRC’s mission and follows through on board, committee and preparation responsibilities.
• Interpersonal and communication skills: Communicates clearly with diverse stakeholders and represents WSMRC with confidence and professionalism.
• Integrity and ethics: Acts with integrity, manages conflicts appropriately and upholds WSMRC’s values and community focus.

Desirable:

In addition, we are seeking individuals with a proven track record in governance and a distinguished skill set to join the Board of Western Sydney MRC in one or more of the Desirable areas outlined below:

• Community Building & Stakeholder Engagement: Builds strong community connections and stakeholder relationships that support WSMRC’s mission.
• AI, innovation and IT: Brings digital, AI, cybersecurity or IT governance experience to improve service delivery and systems.
• Policy and regulation: Understands government, funding and social policy affecting migrant and refugee communities.
• Legal: Offers legal expertise in governance, contracts, employment, migration law or regulatory obligations.
• HR / people and culture: Brings HR, workforce planning, industrial relations or people and culture experience in community settings.
• Aged care: Understands aged care, CHSP, My Aged Care reforms and culturally appropriate service delivery.
• Business development, corporate sponsorship and fundraising: Supports revenue growth through grants, partnerships, sponsorships, philanthropy or fundraising.
• Marketing and media communications: Brings marketing, media or multicultural communications experience, including crisis and issues management.

Time Commitment

Commitment: Voluntary

Location: Western Sydney (Liverpool & Macarthur Region)

Term: Up to 3 years ( renewable, subject to Clause 35 of the WSMRC Constitution).

Sub-committee participation As required

Annual General Meeting Once per year

Strategic planning Once per year

Ad hoc engagement As needed

1. Candidate Profile including: Director Identification Number (DIN) – All directors required to hold an Australian Director Identification Number under the Corporations Act. Candidates should confirm they hold or will obtain a DIN before appointment. Skill Qualifications ( refer to the Rubric included)
2. Conflicts of Interest Form (If applicable) – WSMRC Constitution Clause 42 mandates pre-appointment disclosure of material personal interests. A standalone conflicts declaration is part of the EOI package.
3. Attach CV

Upon receipt, your EOI will be assessed by the Board Nominations Committee, and a shortlist of candidates will be contacted to arrange for interviews which are currently anticipated to be held during the week commencing Monday 21st Sept 2026
