POSITION AVAILABLE

Position Type: Casual employees

Location: Plymouth & Sandburg Middle Schools

Closing Date: Open until filled

Position: Water Safety Instructor or Water Safety Aide

Hourly Rate: WSI: $16.75-$18.50 or WSA: $14.25-$16.00 depending on certification and experience

Schedule Flexible: Up to 12 hours per week, Evenings (typically Tues/Thurs, 5-8:30pm) and weekends (typically two Saturdays a month, 10am-2pm)

SUMMARY

The Community Education Aquatics team is responsible for providing safe, high-quality swim lessons to all participants. Staff are required to communicate with students and families, clearly explaining expectations, lesson objectives, and outcomes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

All staff must:

  • Maintain a safe environment for all participants and staff
  • Know and enforce all program policies and rules
  • Follow established emergency procedures
  • Respond effectively in an emergency situation
  • Maintain current required certifications
  • Inspect pool area for cleanliness, safety hazards, and unsafe conditions
  • Maintain a professional appearance while on duty
  • Arrive on time in proper uniform
  • Participate in in-service training

Swim Instructors and Aides must:

  • Teach lessons according to lesson plans
  • Be responsible for testing for assigned levels
  • Direct and maintain control of class participants
  • Be responsible for accurately maintaining paperwork for each class
  • Communicate effectively with the general public and staff members
  • Demonstrate swimming strokes
  • Accurately evaluate class structure and participant's swim ability and stroke proficiency
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Water Safety Aides assist Water Safety Instructors in all duties

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 14 years old to be a WSA and 16 years old to be a WSI
  • Ability to work with people from various cultures
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and problem solving skills while dealing tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Able to attend work regularly and report to work in a timely manner
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Red Cross CPR, and First-Aid Certificates within two months of hire
  • Current Water Safety Instructors Certificate preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard pool environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes, swim equipment or heavier materials with help from others, and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category requires walking or standing to a significant degree and may involve sitting, swimming, and entering/exiting the pool.
