RESEARCH ASSISTANT (Prater)

Division: CAS Department: Biology Experience: Intermediate‑level

Job Code: NA Supervisor of Student Employee(s): Peyton Prater

Requested Start Date: 8/24/2026

Support faculty‑led field research by assisting with outdoor data collection, equipment setup, and accurate record‑keeping. This role contributes to ecological and environmental projects conducted on and off campus and develops hands‑on skills in safe, professional fieldwork and basic data management.

Responsibilities and Career Competencies:

  1. Conduct outdoor field surveys to collect biological, ecological, or environmental data – CT, C, P, TW
  2. Record, organize, and maintain accurate field notes and data sheets using digital or written formats – CT, T, P
  3. Assist with setup, calibration, and use of field research equipment (e.g., GPS units, sampling nets, environmental sensors) – T, P, CSD
  4. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and peers to complete field projects and research goals – TW, L, C
  5. Ensure safety protocols are followed in outdoor environments (use of protective gear, awareness of hazards) – P, CT, L
  6. Contribute to data entry, preliminary analysis, and preparation of research reports or presentations – T, C, CT
  7. Engage respectfully with local communities, landowners, and partners during off‑campus fieldwork – C, CTR, P
  8. Demonstrate initiative by learning new field methods, research tools, and environmental monitoring techniques – CSD, T, CT
