Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

About the role

We are looking for a motivated working student to support our optical communications development team. The student will contribute to the full software development scope from database design and API development through to GUI deployment and system integrations, working directly with a cross-functional team of process, measurement, and IT engineers. This is an excellent opportunity for students who want to gain hands-on experience in an innovative, technology-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and implementation of a relational database schema including tables, constraints, and controlled data structures
  • Contribute to building and deploying a REST API layer as the controlled interface between the database, user interface, and connected lab systems
  • Develop and deploy a web-based GUI for sample tracking, work order management, event logging, measurement upload, and dashboards
  • Support integration of lab stations to the system — mapping software outputs, defining data formats, and implementing error handling
  • Implement data validation and business logic to ensure data integrity and traceability across the system
  • Write and maintain technical documentation — API documentation, data model descriptions, and basic user guides
  • Support process validation and user testing with the lab team during pilot runs
  • Collaborate with engineers across process, measurement, and IT functions throughout all project phases

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor or Master student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related subject
  • Experience in backend development — REST API design and implementation
  • Experience with relational databases — schema design, SQL queries, and constraints
  • Experience building web applications or GUIs
  • Programming skills in Python, JavaScript, or similar languages
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks

Preferred

  • Familiarity with SQL Server or similar relational database systems
  • Experience with API frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, Django, Node.js, or similar
  • Experience with GUI frameworks such as React, Vue, or similar
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing, lab data systems, or traceability concepts
  • Experience with version control using Git
  • Familiarity with API documentation tools such as Swagger / OpenAPI

Language

  • Fluent in English
  • Confident use of Microsoft Office applications
