Join us on our journey: to build Europe’s largest residential virtual power plant, we are looking for a forward-thinking and driven working student for our Tech / Engineering Department.
Location: Munich, Germany
Employment Type: Part-Time (20 hrs/ week)
Salary Range: €18 per hour (gross) for Bachelor students; €21 per hour (gross) for Master students
Working Mode: Office-based
Language Requirement: C1 Level English
Explore and assess metering solutions that bring full observability to residential clean energy systems - covering all AC and DC paths across PV, wallbox, and battery storage - with a focus on accuracy, protocol compatibility, form factor, and cost-effectiveness.
Research and evaluate metering concepts and devices for precise, simultaneous measurement of AC and DC energy flows across all paths of a residential PV, wallbox, and battery storage setup - comparing options on accuracy, protocol support, form factor, and cost.
Design clear and detailed electrical installation diagrams that document the full metering architecture, covering each generation, consumption, and storage path.
Coordinate the physical installation of metering devices with installers and internal stakeholders, ensuring correct placement, compliance, and data quality from day one.
Design, implement, and deploy an integration device that reads live measurements from all connected meters, aggregates the data, and reliably transmits it to the cloud for use in our optimization platform.
Analyze and visualize measurement results to validate data quality and system behavior - including verifying that power and energy readings are plausible, calculating system efficiencies, and identifying offsets or inaccuracies across measurement paths.
Mandatory requirements
Currently enrolled in a degree program in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
Solid understanding of AC and DC electrical circuits and measurement principles.
Hands-on programming experience in Python and/or C/C++, ideally in an embedded or hardware-interfacing context.
Collaborative mindset with clear communication, comfortable working across technical and non-technical stakeholders (e.g. installers, engineers).
Full business proficiency in English and German (C1 level).
Skills to Set You Apart
Familiarity with energy metering communication protocols such as Modbus RTU/TCP, SunSpec, SML.
Experience working with single-board computers or microcontrollers (e.g. Raspberry Pi, ESP32) to build data acquisition or IoT devices.
Knowledge of residential energy hardware - solar inverters, wallboxes, or home battery systems - and how they expose measurement data.
Experience sending data to the cloud via MQTT, REST APIs, or similar, and basic familiarity with tools like InfluxDB or Grafana for visualisation.
Ability to take ownership of a task end-to-end - from defining the approach and breaking down the work to delivering a working result.
This role may not be a fit for you if…
You prefer to receive clearly scoped tasks rather than define your own scope and milestones.
You are uncomfortable working at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and cloud software within a single project.
At Flexa, we are committed to diversity - of all backgrounds and experiences. You don’t need 100% of the preferred qualifications to add incredible value to our team. If you’re passionate about what you could accomplish here, we’d love to hear from you.
Sebastian Troitzsch, Software Engineering Manager - Flexa
Hi there!
I’m Sebastian Troitzsch, Software Engineering Manager at Flexa, where we focus on building software systems that enable large-scale virtual power plants and intelligent energy management. My expertise sits at the intersection of energy systems, numerical optimization, and scalable cloud software, with a focus on turning complex energy models into reliable production systems that operate in real-world energy markets.
Before joining Flexa, I worked at gridX as Software Team Lead, where I led a team responsible for the dynamic tariff optimization feature of gridX’s energy management system, helping scale the platform from prototype to production systems serving tens of thousands of households.
Earlier in my career, I worked in energy system modeling and optimization research in Singapore, developing the multi-energy system modeling and optimization platform that powered public sector studies into electric vehicle infrastructure rollout and integrated thermal/electrical energy system planning on district level.
At Flexa, we believe innovation happens when talented people collaborate across disciplines. We aim to create an environment where engineers can take ownership, experiment with new ideas, and build technology that has real impact on the future of energy.
If you’re eager to be part of a dynamic and international team as well as excited about building technology that accelerates the transition to a smarter and more flexible energy system, I encourage you to explore opportunities with us.
Thank you for considering a future with us. Looking forward to what we can build together.
Sebastian

flexa is on a mission to build Europe's largest Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in the residential sector together with our partners at Enpal and Entrix.
Our mission is to build and operate a Virtual Power Plant that not only delivers significant energy cost savings but also supports the transition to a 100% renewable electricity future. By offering complete residential energy systems at competitive prices and strategically tapping into multiple revenue streams, we are well-positioned to provide substantial real-world savings to our customers. This approach enhances customer satisfaction as they experience the full benefits of an electrified, energy-generating home.
Through a deep integration into the installed hardware and a direct connection to the customer interfaces, flexa’s AI-based solution controls the energy assets (such as EV, heat pump, home storage, and others) of a decentralized energy community with an exceptional level of accuracy, speed, transparency, and thus customer satisfaction. With intelligent algorithms, flexa maximizes customers’ usable flexibility and its returns on energy markets while considering costs, such as grid fees and asset degradation.
We are rapidly growing our team and are hiring experienced tech professionals interested in revolutionizing the energy sector. We are looking forward to receiving your application!
