Job Description

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projects are undertaking the design, build, and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

  • Monitor the performance and productivity of the crew, providing guidance and support to achieve project goals.
  • Enforce strict adherence to all safety regulations and company policies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Ensure all team members are trained in safety procedures and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Investigate and report any accidents, incidents, or near misses, implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, and other project staff to ensure seamless workflow and address any technical or operational issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily activities, equipment usage, and progress reports.
  • Review and interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications to ensure proper execution of tasks.
  • Oversee the proper maintenance and operation of tunneling equipment, ensuring readiness and safety.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive team environment, promoting communication and cooperation among crew members.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling work shifts, allocating resources efficiently to meet project demands.
  • Address any personnel issues or conflicts promptly, ensuring a harmonious and productive workplace.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices, safety standards, and technological advancements relevant to tunneling operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in tunneling, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Minimum of 5 years of roadheader experience
  • Strong knowledge of tunneling techniques, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Proven track record of maintaining a high standard of safety and quality in previous roles.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and project specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Willingness to work 12-hour shifts, 5 days a week.
  • High level of assiduity, hard work, and dedication to task completion.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in a metro or urban tunneling project.
  • Advanced knowledge of mining operations and underground construction methods.
  • Certifications in safety management or related fields.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires working underground in confined spaces.
  • The role involves physical labor and exposure to varying environmental conditions.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times.
  • Adherence to strict safety protocols is mandatory to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of all personnel.

About Ontario Transit Group - Ontario Line - Southern Civil, Stations & Tunnel

Ontario Transit Group (OTG) is a joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Vinci Construction Grands Projets (through their subsidiary JANIN ATLAS) to design, build and deliver the Ontario Line Subway - Southern Civil, Stations and Tunnel work for Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario. The south section of the line will join Exhibition Place to the Don Yard portal.

Scope of work for the Ontario Line South Civil design-build-finance package includes:

- A six-kilometre tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River)

- Groundworks required to build the tunnels and stations; utility and conduit works to prepare for the Rolling Stock, Systems, Operations and Maintenance (RSSOM) mechanical and electrical systems; guideway structures and facilities to prepare for the track structure to be installed by the RSSOM contractor.

- Stations: One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station. Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations. Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

When completed with the northern section of the Ontario Line, the new subway line will be a 15.6-kilometre subway line with 15 new stations to the and will connect Exhibition Place all the way to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT at Don Mills Road.
