Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, Crisis Shelter & Affordable Housing, the Women’s Support Partner is responsible for providing inclusive and equitable support to women and their children residing in our domestic violence shelter. This position works collaboratively with the shelter team to ensure effective and empowering services are in place for women and children impacted by domestic violence.

This is an evening position Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays, from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Use principles of client-centered, trauma-informed care to provide support for women and children shelter residents who have experienced violence
  • Answer all calls on the 24-hour crisis line during shift, screen potential residents and support transition to another shelter or support if we cannot accommodate
  • Conduct intake with residents, including risk assessment and safety planning
  • Build and maintain positive, supportive, non-judgmental, and respectful resident relations
  • Support and assist shelter residents with questions, concerns, hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, bedding, food, and other needs as they arise
  • Provide information about and/or referrals to appropriate community agencies and resources
  • Provide move-in and move-out room checks with residents if moves occur
  • Maintain the safety and security of the shelter and report concerns to the organizational and/or facilities on-call
  • Monitor security cameras and entrances to ensure safety
  • Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of all shelter residents and monitor the admission of guests, visitors, vendors, contractors, and authorities as required
  • Communicate necessary resident information at shift change to incoming team
  • Maintain shelter cleanliness through light housekeeping; support inventory management by monitoring and restocking supplies as needed
  • Enter and maintain resident information in electronic and physical files
  • Keep accurate records and ensure data entry is completed on time and according to organizational and program standards
  • Complete data audits regularly to ensure data entry is accurate
  • Support with pre and post surveys and other data collection as required
  • Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into one’s role, work, and engagement with others
  • Share individual accountability to create and maintain inclusive and safe spaces and practices (physically and psychologically) that are open, transparent, and encourage accountability and advocacy

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in social work or equivalent in the Human Services field. A combination of other education and relevant experience will also be considered
  • First Aid and CPR certification; Brain Story certification, ASIST, NVCI training and Food Safe certification are required within 6 months of employment

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Knowledge of anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, client-centered and inclusive practices
  • Experience in the field of domestic violence (e.g. in a crisis shelter setting), working with women facing mental health challenges and systemic, intersecting barriers
  • Experience supporting diverse clientele, including newcomers to Canada and other equity-seeking groups
  • Experience in systems navigation, case management, community and partnership development
  • Experience with intake, risk assessment, safety planning and crisis intervention is an asset
  • Ability to manage crisis calmly and effectively
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to easily develop rapport with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to create and maintain healthy boundaries with clients and colleagues
  • The ability to speak other languages is an asset
