Job Description

The Communication Wireworker / Network Infrastructure Electrician is a highly skilled field technician responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and supporting electrical, structured cabling, fiber optic, and low-voltage communication systems across utility and critical infrastructure environments. This role combines Journeyman-level electrical expertise with telecommunications and networking knowledge to support communications infrastructure within substations, service centers, operations facilities, control centers, data centers, and other utility locations. The ideal candidate will be capable of independently installing and commissioning electrical power circuits, copper and fiber network infrastructure, wireless communication components, and utility business systems equipment while adhering to all safety and regulatory requirements. This position supports a large geographic territory requiring frequent travel and overnight stays and is intended to serve as a long-term resource supporting utility modernization and communications infrastructure projects. Key Responsibilities Electrical Infrastructure Install, modify, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems supporting communications and network equipment. Install 120V and 208V electrical circuits for communications cabinets, networking equipment, and business systems infrastructure. Land breakers in electrical panels and perform terminations in accordance with applicable electrical codes. Bend and install conduit, cable tray systems, raceways, grounding systems, and supporting electrical infrastructure. Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, one-line diagrams, network drawings, and construction documentation. Ensure compliance with NEC, OSHA, NFPA 70E, utility standards, and local electrical regulations. Structured Cabling & Network Infrastructure Install, terminate, test, certify, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling systems. Perform CAT6A, CAT7, coaxial, multimode fiber, and single-mode fiber installations. Conduct fiber splicing, OTDR testing, power meter testing, and certification testing. Troubleshoot connectivity and physical layer network issues. Install and support network infrastructure within MDFs, IDFs, communication shelters, substations, network rooms, and data center environments. Maintain cable management, labeling, and documentation standards consistent with BICSI and ANSI/TIA guidelines. Utility Communications & Field Operations Build, wire, and commission utility business systems cabinets within substations and utility facilities. Install fiber and Ethernet connections between substation equipment, communication cabinets, and network infrastructure. Support LAN, WAN, SCADA, radio, microwave, and utility communications deployments. Perform communications infrastructure upgrades in substations, service centers, control centers, and other utility locations. Conduct site surveys and evaluate communications and electrical infrastructure requirements. Coordinate activities with engineers, communication technicians, contractors, project managers, and utility operations personnel. Testing, Certification & Documentation Perform acceptance testing and certification of installed communications infrastructure. Operate fiber testing equipment including OTDRs, fusion splicers, power meters, and certification testers. Maintain accurate as-built drawings, test results, inventories, and installation records. Document deficiencies and recommend corrective actions. Ensure all installations meet company quality, workmanship, and performance standards. Safety & Compliance Follow all company, utility, and regulatory safety requirements. Participate in pre-job safety briefings and hazard assessments. Maintain qualified worker status and required certifications. Perform all work safely, professionally, and in compliance with established standards.

Education High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship, vocational training, or technical program in electrical or telecommunications disciplines preferred. Experience Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical construction, structured cabling, telecommunications, utility communications, or related field services. Experience installing and troubleshooting copper and fiber optic communications infrastructure. Experience with conduit installation, electrical terminations, and low-voltage communications systems. Experience reading electrical, telecommunications, and network infrastructure drawings. Experience working in substations, industrial facilities, data centers, utility environments, or critical infrastructure sites preferred. Required Certifications Journeyman Electrician License (required for at least one position; strongly preferred for all candidates). BICSI Technician (TECH) Certification, or ability to obtain certification within an agreed timeframe. Valid Driver's License. Preferred Certifications BICSI Installer 2 Copper. BICSI Installer 2 Optical Fiber. BICSI RCDD. FOA Fiber Optic Certifications. Fluke Certification Testing Experience. Manufacturer Certifications (CommScope, Corning, Panduit, Leviton, Cisco, etc.). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong understanding of AC/DC electrical systems and electrical safety practices. Knowledge of structured cabling standards, ANSI/TIA requirements, and BICSI best practices. Proficiency in fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting. Understanding of basic networking concepts including Ethernet, LAN/WAN infrastructure, and physical layer troubleshooting. Ability to independently perform field installations with minimal supervision. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to operate lifts, ladders, fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, and electrical testing equipment. Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
