What the role is all about:

WinSport Summer Camps is seeking a dynamic and passionate individual for the position of Wilderness Coach. If you have a genuine interest in working with youth, developing young explorers, and a commitment to excellence, we invite you to apply.

Candidates for this position should have experience working with children/youth in a coaching environment, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills, including a guest success mindset.

As Wilderness Coach, your primary role is to oversee and execute wilderness program operations. You will ensure campers, parents, Volunteers, and WinSport Team Members have exceptional experiences. You may accompany groups on their weekly trips to Kananaskis. These trips will be led by CPAWS and assisted by yourselves and instructors.

This position requires strong leadership and coaching skills to effectively manage wilderness programming and ensure young adventurers develop our three lessons of wilderness preparedness: Backcountry, Crafts and Emergency skills. You will work collaboratively with Sport leadership to design fun, unique, and engaging programming that elevates the sport and ignites a passion for those participating.

What you will be doing:

Program Execution and Progression Delivery

  • Accurately inventory wilderness equipment ensuring it is good working condition.
  • Coach up to 12 participants of similar skill levels at one time whilst directing instructors to provide support.
  • Design and lead daily wilderness programming including knife whittling, shelter construction and fire building for various skill levels aligning to the camp’s key goals and level guide.
  • Make program accommodations for participants of various skill levels, and learning needs to ensure exceptional experiences.

Leading Children and Youth

  • Be a role model for youth aged 4-15 and for team members of various ages.
  • Mediate conflicts amongst participants, consistently and fairly.
  • Participate in the play!

Safety

  • Role model and adhere to all WinSport policies and procedures.
  • Assess and manage risks within programming whilst supervising participants.
  • Provide frequent safety briefings to all campers and team members to ensure adherence to the fire building and knife whittling risk control plans.
  • Other Duties as Required

What you bring:

  • Must be available for mandatory staff training from June 22 to 26, 2026. Must be available for mandatory coach training from June 2 to 4, 2026.
  • Must be available Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, from June 29 to August 28, 2026, for at least 7 of the 9 weeks of summer camps.
  • Must be available specifically for Weeks 2 and 3 of summer camps, July 6 to 10 and July 13 to 17, 2026.
  • Current criminal record check with vulnerable sector search
  • Experience coaching or instructing is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with children and youth in a camp or day program environment is an asset.
  • Current Standard (Intermediate) First Aid and CPR level C certification
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience as an artist using natural materials is considered an asset.
  • Experience with safe fire-building and maintenance is considered an asset.    
  • Experience knife whittling and wood carving, with the ability to carve a wooden spoon for example, is considered an asset.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to tie a bowline, and trucker hitch knot.

Work Conditions:

  • 40-44 Hours per week
  • Ability to run, walk, and jump for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work outside for long periods of time in various weather conditions.
  • Full-time, in-person availability is required.
  • Maintain a high level of positive energy throughout the day.
  • The job is frequently expected to lift, carry, throw, push, or pull objects (sporting equipment).
