Job Description



The Pipeline Welding Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all welding operations with optimal performance of welding equipment, consumables, spares and personnel offshore/onshore pipeline construction. The position focusses on ensure pipeline weld integrity by ensuring welding activities are executed in compliance to project specifications, welding procedure, and project procedures. They provide feedback to improve the welding procedure to ensure high productivity and consistent weld quality during procedure qualification test and pipeline construction. The role ensures coordinating multidisciplinary teams and interface with key stakeholders such as Marine; Quality, Offshore field Engineer/ Production Engineer, PPG welding Lead, NDT lead, NDT Supervisor, Coating supervisor, and equipment lead to achieve project objectives. The Welding supervisor shall ensure compliance with project procedures, optimizes resources, and mitigates risks to deliver pipelines as per MDR safety and quality requirements on schedule and within budget. Welding supervisor is accountable for the Welding station activities during project execution with respect to Welding readiness, start-up, production KPI, minimize downtime and Lesson learned.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, implement and monitor pipeline welding activities at firing line/ onsite construction stations as per Inspection plans and procedures in alignment with project approved procedures and international standards during offshore/ onshore pipeline construction.

  • Liaise with Field/ Production Engineer, Barge Superintendent, QC, NDT supervisor, Certifying Authority, PPG Welding Lead, Equipment Lead, FJC Supervsior & NDT Lead during pipeline construction to ensure timely clearance for production continuity.

  • Responsible for Welding readiness with respect to availability of Welding procedures, Welding stations, Qualified Welders, Welding consumables and spares, competent personnel to comply with project schedule.

  • Review the planned welding cycle time and ensure the execution of welding as per the cycle time and guide personnel in case of any issues.

  • Responsible for participation in kick-off meetings, readiness reviews including lessons learned during project set up, start of Welding procedure and welder qualification, pipeline installation, ensure close out of project and provide lessons learned during construction.

  • Responsible to monitor and ensure inventory of welding consumables, shielding gases, spares and consumables are available onboard by raising requisitions in a timely manner to avoid any downtime.

  • Liase with welding lead for operation and technical matters during system setup, production welding and welding parameters, inspection, fit up etc. during pipeline execution.

  • Responsible to troubleshoot technical and quality-related welding issues and implement corrective actions mainly focused on welding parameters side through software for automatic weld, bevel geometry strict control, pre-heat and inter-pass strict control.

  • Manage welding personnel, assign daily tasks, monitor productivity and ensure proper use of equipment and consumables.

  • Maintain accurate records of welding operations, including welder records, repair details, down time, station timing and certifications of welders.

  • Maintain detailed daily reports and records of all welding activities such as joints welded, breakdown of equipments, welding consumables, repair statistics, welder tracability and resource utilization. The daily report shall be shared with PPG team.

  • Ensure compliance with MDR HSE requirements and quality assurance procedures throughout all stages of pipeline operations.

  • Ensure first line inspection by verifying materials, welding consumables, checking shielding gas quality on arrival, verifying qualification of welders or liase with PPG welding Engineer/ QCI onboard to confirm, conduct fit up and visual inspections to ensure compliance with project specification/ procedures and coordinate with NDT team for NDT results and marking repairs on weld correctly.

  • Responsible for firing line/ Onsite welding activities by ensuring readiness, resolve on start up issues, ensure sufficient shielding gas and welding consumables, monitor actual pipelay rate against planned and provide technical support to resolve day to day issues during pipeline construction.

  • Participate in daily coordination meetings, safety & Quality tool box talks with construction and QHSES team.

  • Interface with client representatives and third-party inspectors during audits and inspections when required.

  • Assess competency of welders, bevel operators, arrange training and mentoring the team to develop skills.

  • Coordinates the training and development of the workforce to improve the welding methodology and good workmanship practices.

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • High school diploma is typically the minimum requirement, with preference for a technical qualification or trade certificate in a relevant field.

  • Minimum 5-10 years of hands-on experience in pipeline welding preferably on offshore projects with at least 2 years in supervisory roles and shall have knowledge on automatic or semi-automatic welding machines.

  • Proficiency in reading technical drawings, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and inspection plan documents.

  • In depth knowledge on various base materials used in the oil & gas pipeline like carbon steel, CRA clad steel, of ILUC working principles, Argon purging (CRA case), monitoring of copper shoes wearing off status.
