
Under the general supervision of the Foreman, the welder/mechanic is responsible for all the metal fabrication and maintenance needs of the assigned depot. This includes but is not limited to the fabrication and repair of heavy construction equipment and attachments; snowplows and spreading apparatus; buildings and appurtenances; roadways, bridges, and tunnels.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform skilled fabrication welding and burning plasma cutting as required in the repair or maintenance of toll and/or construction equipment.
Operate and perform maintenance and regular diagnostic testing on welding equipment in conformance with maintenance and safety schedules.
Fabricate specialized devices for fast lane department.
Fabricate a wide variety of metal structures from oral directions, blueprint sketches, drawings, and written specifications.
Trouble shoot, repair, documents, and test motor equipment.
Assist mechanics in repairs on motor equipment when required.
Records and maintains accurate information on inspected/repaired vehicles.
Operates related equipment including but not limited to drill presses, grinders, heliarc, mig welder, torches to perform assigned tasks.
Coordinates with engineers on fabricating structural components/devises.
Must be available for scheduled overtime work and overtime work for snow and ice operations and emergency conditions.
Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least four years of experience as a welder.
Successful completion of an apprenticeship program overseen by a recognized certification authority may be substituted for the required experience.
Possession of a certificate in welding from a recognized trade or technical school may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a valid Massachusetts vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record.
2. Possession of an arc welding certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Public Safety Hoisting license 2A or 2B.
