The Welder is responsible for performing precision Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) on titanium and other specialty alloys within a controlled argon chamber (glove box) environment. This position requires a high level of precision, attention to detail, and adherence to strict cleanliness and quality standards to ensure contamination-free welds that meet engineering and customer specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform precision GTAW/TIG welding of titanium and other specialty metals within a sealed argon chamber (glove box) to maintain an oxygen- and contamination-free environment.
Set up, operate, and monitor argon chamber equipment, including verifying proper purge cycles, oxygen levels, and chamber integrity prior to welding.
Prepare and clean materials in accordance with titanium welding requirements to prevent contamination.
Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, weld symbols, and manufacturing specifications.
Assemble, fit, align, and tack components prior to welding.
Inspect completed welds for quality, appearance, penetration, and compliance with specifications.
Perform grinding, polishing, and finishing operations as required.
Use precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances.
Maintain welding equipment, argon chamber systems, and tools in proper working condition.
Complete production documentation and quality records accurately.
Follow all safety procedures related to welding, compressed gases, and manufacturing operations.
Maintain a clean, organized work area and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Technical training or certification in GTAW/TIG welding preferred. Certification of EN ISO 9606.1 is desirable.
Experience welding titanium or other reactive metals preferred.
Experience operating or working within an inert gas glove box or argon chamber is highly desirable.
Ability to read blueprints and welding specifications.
Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency in GTAW/TIG welding techniques.
Knowledge of titanium welding best practices, including contamination prevention and inert gas shielding.
Understanding of argon chamber (glove box) operation, oxygen monitoring, and purge procedures.
Ability to produce precision, high-quality welds that meet stringent quality standards.
Familiarity with inspection methods, measuring equipment, and manufacturing documentation.
Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
Manual dexterity required to perform precision welding while working through glove ports in an argon chamber.
Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and work safely around welding equipment and compressed gases.
Visual acuity sufficient to inspect and produce high-quality precision welds.
