Job Title

ASME Section IX Qualified Welder

Position Summary

The ASME Section IX Welder is responsible for performing manual and semi-automatic welding operations on pressure-retaining and structural components in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section IX requirements, engineering drawings, quality standards, and company safety procedures. The welder must consistently produce high-quality welds that meet dimensional, visual, and nondestructive examination requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW (Stick), FCAW, or other welding processes as qualified.
• Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy materials, and other metals according to approved WPS requirements.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, fabrication sketches, weld symbols, routing instructions, and specifications.
• Set up and operate welding equipment safely and efficiently.
• Verify materials, consumables, joint preparation, and fit-up prior to welding.
• Maintain compliance with ASME Section IX welding qualifications and procedure requirements.
• Perform preheat, interpass temperature monitoring, and post-weld activities as specified.
• Conduct visual inspection of completed welds to ensure compliance with quality standards.
• Work closely with Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Production personnel to resolve fabrication issues.
• Complete required production and quality documentation accurately.
• Assist with welder qualification tests (WQTRs/WPQs) as required.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S and facility safety requirements.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 3 years of welding experience in manufacturing, fabrication, pressure vessel, valve, piping, or nuclear industry environment.
• Current or previous qualification to ASME Section IX welding procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret weld symbols and engineering drawings.
• Experience using precision measuring instruments including tape measures, calipers, and weld gauges.
• Strong understanding of welding fundamentals, metallurgy, distortion control, and fit-up practices.
• Ability to pass ASME Section IX performance qualifications as required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience welding pressure boundary components.
• Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.1, B31.3, or nuclear quality requirements.
• Experience with stainless steel, Inconel, chrome-moly, or specialty alloys.
• Certified Welder (AWS or equivalent).
• Overhead crane and forklift experience.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including welding helmet, respirator, gloves, and protective clothing.
• Must meet vision requirements necessary to perform quality welding work.

• First-pass weld acceptance rate.
• Rework and repair rate.
• Productivity against labor standards.
• Compliance with WPS and quality requirements.
• Safety performance and adherence to 5S standards.
• On-time completion of assigned work orders.
