The Welder plans and executes complex welding and metal-fabrication assignments from technical drawings, specifications, and work orders; produces high-integrity welds on a wide range of metals and alloys; and fabricates, repairs, and installs structures, components, equipment, and test articles. This hands-on role requires advanced proficiency across multiple welding processes, precision layout and shop mathematics, use of specialized welding and sheet-metal equipment, and on-site evaluation of structural damage and repair requirements. The Welder will also maintain accurate work-order documentation and provide qualified backup support to machining and sheet-metal fabrication operations as needed.

  • Summary of Duties:

    • Apply oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, metal spray arc, spot, and stud welding to join common metals and alloys, including dissimilar metals; weld structures, plates, sheet metal, castings, forgings, pipes, boilers, shafts, turbines, valves, caissons, and tanks; produce water- and air-tight welds with complete penetration and fusion, including in hard-to-reach positions
    • Prepare welding surfaces; set up clamp fixtures and devise special jigs and fixtures
    • Visiting worksites to analyze, evaluate, and classify structural sheet metal damage; adjust job layout based on on-site inspection; compute irregular curves, angles, and pitch with complicated shop mathematics; determine materials, tools, and equipment
    • Develop patterns and cut, form, join, assemble, and install items with combined straight/curved edges and irregular angles; apply radial-line and parallel-line development; fabricate dovetailed, set-in-bottom, burred-bottom, wire, and lock seams; fabricate templates
    • Operate and maintain slip roll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines, crimping/burring/turning/beading machines, hydraulic press brake, shears, form roller, hand brakes, drill press, saws, punches, plate roll, and soldering/welding equipment; update the work order system to completion
    • Provide backup capability in the Machinist and Sheet Metal Fabricator areas
  • Required Qualifications:
    • 10 years' experience as a welder who has designed or participated in the design of new or improved items
    • Knowledge of aluminum, stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material, and alloys; of a wide range of welding principles and difficult techniques requiring complete penetration and fusion; and of welding standards and metal reactions to welding processes
    • Knowledge of related metal trades: brazing, soldering, flame- and arc-cutting, surface hardening, annealing, and metal spraying
    • Skill in reading blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications; complicated shop mathematics; structural damage evaluation
    • Skill with complicated hand and power tools and precision measuring instruments
    • NACI; DoD CAC;
    • Valid state driver's license;
