Responsible for assisting the Survey Party Chief in managing and supporting field surveying activities across various job locations. This position supports construction survey operations by setting up, operating, and maintaining survey instruments and helping execute a wide range of surveying tasks in dynamic heavy civil / roadway construction environments.

A safety-first, reliable, and detail-oriented field professional with strong technical capability and the ability to work effectively in changing outdoor job-site conditions is required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Complete tasks utilizing survey instruments and equipment per the direction of the Survey Party Chief.

  • Set up, operate, and maintain survey instruments, including total stations, GPS (RTK), levels, and data collectors (e.g., Trimble).

Assist in performing surveying activities such as:

  • Construction layout (stakeout)

  • Topographic surveys

  • As-built surveys

  • Boundary and right-of-way surveys

  • Collect, record, and verify survey data accurately; assist with data quality checks.

  • Perform basic field calculations and support project execution through accurate layout and control.

  • Stake and mark points for construction activities and site control.

  • Maintain and properly care for survey instruments and equipment; report damages or malfunctions.

  • Load/unload equipment and prepare for daily field work.

  • Dig, spread, and level dirt, sand, and gravel using hand tools.

  • Lift, carry, and manually transport construction materials, tools, and supplies.

  • Clean tools, equipment, materials, and the work area.

  • Mix and spread concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials using hand tools.

  • Join, wrap, and seal sections of pipe.

  • Perform a variety of routine non-machine tasks such as removing forms, filling excavations, placing pipe sections in trench, and assembling sections of pipe.

  • Perform a variety of machine tasks such as tamping soil, jack hammering, and assisting in the fusing of pipe.

  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.

  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.

  • When not performing the above essential duties and responsibilities, may assist in other operations as designated by the supervisor.

  • Other unlisted duties will be assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

  • 1–3+ years of experience in land surveying, construction surveying, or related field preferred.

  • Previous experience operating survey instruments and equipment, including Total Station, GPS, and levels.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specification s.

  • Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to communicate in English via verbal and written communications.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures; report unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.

  • Follow all company safety procedures and applicable OSHA guidelines.

  • OSHA certification preferred (or willingness to obtain). (if applicable)

Preferred: Experience with DOT/roadway construction projects; familiarity with RTK/VRS workflows; heavy civil construction environment experience.

Safety Policies and Practices The employee in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the company’s safety policies and procedures as described in the company’s safety manual.

Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.

Experience: At least three years of related construction experience preferred.

Physical Activity Level: Heavy physical activity performing strenuous day activities of a primarily productive/technical nature. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds (up to 50–75 pounds of equipment where applicable).

Manual Dexterity: Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and work with the fingers. Ability to perceive attributes of objects and materials.

Working Conditions: Outdoor exposure to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.)

Work Environment: The work environment/physical demands characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; and high and/or precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
