The Washington Veterans Home is seeking a skilled Stationary Engineer 2 to join our Facilities Management team and help maintain the critical systems that support the care and comfort of Washington's Veterans.

Whether your background is in boiler operations, HVAC, industrial maintenance, marine engineering, power generation, building automation, or facility operations, this position offers a unique opportunity to apply your technical skills in a rewarding healthcare environment while enjoying the stability and benefits of State employment.

In this role, you'll work with a diverse range of equipment including high-pressure boilers, steam distribution systems, HVAC equipment, pumps, emergency generators, domestic hot water systems, and computerized building controls. No two days are the same, and your expertise will directly contribute to keeping our campus safe, comfortable, and operational 24 hours a day.



Please Note: The expected schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Work schedule may be adjusted to meet business needs and can be at times asked to work later to support unique circumstances. This position is not eligible for telework.

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules. This salary range reflects increases effective July 1st, 2026.

Homes 24/7 facility differential: Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities. Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

Examples of duties

Some of what you'll be doing includes:

  • Operate, troubleshoot, repairs, and maintains steam distribution systems and flow control components.
  • Install, maintain and repair piping, valves, pumps, and switches for chilled water, steam, and heating hot water systems.
  • Conducting safe Steam Plant start up, adjustments and optimization, monitoring gauges, meters, and operating panels.
  • Operating, repairing, and maintaining Steam Plant and associated systems.
  • Ensuring that plant equipment operates safely, efficiently and within established operating parameters.
  • Maintaining proper boiler chemistry, through feed water testing and water treatment.
  • Record relevant events and facts concerning the operation and maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Providing operating and maintenance support for power distribution, sewer, fireman, and domestic water distribution systems.
  • Conducting all scheduled fire drills and coordinating fire alarm, sprinkler, extinguisher, and fire door and hood inspections.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of stationary or marine high pressure boilers and heating systems.
OR

  • Certification of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college AND two (2) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of stationary or marine high pressure boilers and heating systems.
OR

  • One (1) year of state service as a Stationary Engineer 1.
Also,
  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • Agency Required Competencies for all positions:
      • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
      • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
Preferred/Desired:
  • Knowledge of boilers, controls, pumps, valves, regulators, fuels, diesel generators, and tools used in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers, related systems, auxiliary equipment, boiler room safety, heating, lighting, ventilation, and other related mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to test and analyze operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment, instruct and supervise others, keep records, make written reports, perform heavy manual labor, work under and withstand extremes of temperature.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to maintenance trades.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to read commercial blueprints and apply building codes through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
  • Experience using maintenance tracking and reporting programs.
