Job Description

We are currently seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Water Treatment Operator for a 6-months contract with extension options to join our GFL team at the Stoney Creek Regional Facility (SCRF). A state-of-the-art, fully enclosed leachate treatment facility with advanced odour management, automation, and remote-control capabilities is currently under construction, with commissioning scheduled to begin this Spring 2026. At GFL Environmental, we believe in a Safe for Life culture. Health and safety is our top priority in everything we do.

As a Water Treatment Operator, you will play a crucial role in the daily operation, preventive maintenance, and continuous monitoring of our new leachate treatment facility involving physico-chemical processes. You will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and compliant management of leachate, utilizing chemical dosing, process adjustments, and rigorous on-site testing. In addition to executing hands-on preventive maintenance for complex facility equipment, you will provide critical oversight of third-party analytical laboratories and coordinate with external service vendors to ensure operational continuity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process Operation Optimization: Operate and control the physico-chemical leachate treatment process, including chemical dosing and making necessary adjustments based on process performance and analytical results. You will be required to conduct inspection rounds and respond to service calls.

  • Laboratory Testing: Conduct regular jar testing and on-site laboratory analyses to optimize chemical dosing and ensure treatment efficiency. Calibrate and maintain laboratory and online instrumentation (e.g., pH, conductivity, etc.).

  • Facility Monitoring: Monitor the fully enclosed treatment facility, including the automated control systems and odour management systems, utilizing remote access and control features as needed.

  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance on treatment equipment (pumps, mixers, dosing systems, etc.) and facility infrastructure. Ensure the work area and equipment are kept clean and in good working order. You will be responsible for minor repairs (replacing pumps, parts, etc.) and supervising the work of external vendors in charge of major repairs.

  • Compliance Reporting: Conduct compliance monitoring, collect samples for external laboratory analysis, and maintain accurate and comprehensive logs of operations, maintenance activities, and analytical results. Assist in the preparation of required compliance reports.

  • Health Safety: Strictly adhere to all GFL Safe for Life policies, procedures, and relevant occupational health and safety regulations. Actively participate in safety meetings and hazard assessments.

  • Commissioning Support: Assist with the commissioning phase of the new facility, including equipment testing, process proving, and troubleshooting.

  • Material Handling: Manage the receiving and safe storage of treatment chemicals and coordinate the removal of treatment residuals.

  • General Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned to support the environmental compliance and operational efficiency of the SCRF

Key Requirements:

  • Education: College diploma or technical certificate in Water/Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Technology, Chemistry, or a related field.

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience operating a water or wastewater treatment facility. Experience with physico-chemical processes and chemical dosing is highly preferred. Previous experience assisting with facility commissioning is considered a significant asset.

  • Strong understanding of physico-chemical treatment principles.

  • Proficiency in performing jar tests and basic laboratory analyses.

  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, automated controls, and remote monitoring.

  • Mechanical aptitude for performing preventive maintenance.

  • Must hold a valid drivers license.

  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working in various environmental conditions within an enclosed facility.
