  • Performs activities related to the sampling and inspection of water quality at storm sewer outfalls, sewer discharge locations and surface waters within the City of Toronto.
  • Daily - Prepares, cleans, transports, calibrates, and maintains sampling and safety equipment for use and correct calibration, if necessary.
  • Operates and maintains the appearance and organization of Toronto Water vehicles.
  • Visually inspects watersheds for storm sewer outfalls and documents information (example field sheet, log book) related to these outfalls.
  • Collects water/wastewater samples for various parameters (examples: metals, phosphorus, volatile organic compounds, bacteria, etc), from from City sewers and outfall.
  • Preserves water/wastewater quality samples for analysis by laboratory.
  • Operates and maintains water quality monitoring instrumentation (example pH meters, conductivity meters, turbidity meters, automatic samplers, etc.).
  • Uses the City Work Management System to create work orders, schedule, log, and create labels to submit water/wastewater samples for analysis to the laboratory.
  • Uses the City’s Work Management System to create and enter inspection reports.
  • Takes samples, from Land and/or Boat, for testing the water quality of sewers, Creeks, Rivers, and Lake Ontario for the City's Outfall Monitoring Program.
  • Maintains records, generates reports, and enters field or sample data into applicable software systems.
  • Sample preparation (prepare coolers, chain of custody and sample bottles for the Beaches Monitoring Program and Outfall Monitoring Program.
  • Transport beaches samples to laboratories ensuring all paperwork is filled out accurately and complete for processing.
  • Enter daily beach observations and sample results into the City's Work Management System.
  • Act as a team member working with the unit supervisors, manager, engineering technologist technician 1, bylaw officers, senior water quality inspector, and quality control officers.
  • Creates and/or inputs information and/or data into MS Word or Excel.
  • Performs administrative duties as assigned by the supervisor or other management staff

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Currently enrolled in a post-secondary school, in science, environmental science, or engineering.
  2. Experience with performing sampling preferably related to stormwater and/or wastewater.
  3. Experience with computers and various software, including but not limited to MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint).
  4. Must possess a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and able to pass and maintain a City's Operator's permit.

You Must Also Have:

  • Physically fit and able to hike up and down river banks carrying moderate loads (up to 20 Kg) for the purpose of inspections and sampling under varying climatic (hot/cold) conditions
  • Able to swim proficiently.
  • Able to operate and work on a pleasure watercraft on the near shore of Lake Ontario would be an asset.
  • Having Pleasure Craft Operator Card and Powered Vessel Operator’s Permit would be an asset.
  • Good organizational and leadership skills. Ability to plan, prioritize, organize daily work and work independently or in a team environment.
  • Able to communicate written/orally with co-workers and write reports.
  • Report to work punctually, work in a team environment or independently, and follow directives and work in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Able to report to work at 7:30 am, work weekends and holidays, occasional afternoons, start employment in early April, and work straight through to the September Labour Day weekend. There may be a need to work every weekend and long weekends in the spring/summer and two days off would be provided during the weekday, as a result.
