Pay

  • Water Plant Operator Grade II - $37.09 - $45.08 Hourly DOQ

  • Water Plant Operator Grade III – $40.77 - $49.56 Hourly DOQ

  • Water Plant Operator Grade IV – $42.86 - $52.10 Hourly DOQ

About the Opportunity

The City of Ventura is now accepting applications for the position of Water Plant Operator Grade II/III/IV (Promotional Only).

Reporting to the Water Treatment Supervisor, the Water Plant Operator I/II/III/IV performs maintenance work to operate and maintain the functions and equipment of water treatment plant facilities.

Positions are flexibly staffed, and progression from one level to another is based upon the incumbent's successful completion of the appropriate Water Plant Operator certificates.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Operating and monitoring water treatment plant equipment, including pumps, chemical feed systems, and SCADA controls.

  • Inspecting equipment, troubleshooting issues, and making operational adjustments to ensure efficient plant performance.

  • Performing routine maintenance, repairs, and servicing of treatment plant machinery and facilities.

  • Collecting water samples and conducting laboratory testing to support water quality compliance requirements.

  • Recording operational data, maintaining logs, and preparing reports related to plant activities.

  • Monitoring treatment processes and assisting with regulatory compliance through sampling, testing, and documentation.

  • Responding to customer concerns and emergency after-hours callouts as assigned.

  • Performing general maintenance, repair, cleaning, and groundskeeping activities at treatment plant facilities.

  • Working stand-by on a rotational basis and responding to callback assignments as needed within designated timeframes. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Manager.

The Ideal Candidate – Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will:

  • Possess a valid Grade II, III, or IV Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the California Water Resources Control Board

  • Adhere to safe work practices

  • Work independently, making informed decisions based on experience and judgment

  • Flexibly shift priorities from day to day or hour to hour as necessary

  • Work cooperatively with other team members, collaboratively to sustain coordinated efforts

  • Demonstrate professional work ethic

  • Display integrity coupled with interpersonal customer service skills

Minimum Qualifications – Required

A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from high school or its equivalent and education and experience commensurate with each grade level of certification as required by the state, which includes some course work in area of assignment.

Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to climb ladders, use power tools, and equipment.

Required to pass annual physical examination related to the upper respiratory system, wear breathing apparatus, and other safety equipment.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES

License Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license upon employment.

Certificate

Possession of a Grade II, III, or IV Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Grade II Operators will be required to obtain the Grade III certificate within a 24-month period.
