The Wastewater Engineer is responsible for evaluating treatment alternatives, resolving technical issues, and supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of wastewater treatment systems. This role plans and executes wastewater-related projects, oversees construction and infrastructure upgrades, and supports environmental impact studies and permitting activities. The Wastewater Engineer analyzes wastewater streams and treatment performance—including sludge, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia, and nutrients—to recommend process, equipment, and monitoring improvements that enhance efficiency and regulatory compliance, while ensuring adherence to environmental regulations, safety programs, and company policies and promoting a strong safety culture.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and at least 0-3 years of wastewater treatment experience.
KNOWLEDGE:
Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:
Engineer in Training (EI) certification preferred. Must be able to obtain a Class D Waste Water certification within 12 months of hire date. Waste Water certification must be kept current and renewed every three (3) years. Must be willing to obtain higher Waste Water certifications as needed and as responsibilities require.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to speak comfortably with the executive leadership team. Must be able to present reports and findings.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Algebra and unit conversions. Mass balance calculations. Basic statistics and trend analysis. Spreadsheet math (Excel-heavy).
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply reason to everyday situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong organizational and time management skills. A passion for water, problem-solving, and building collaborative relationships. Must be willing to work 10-hour days and frequent weekends.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to climb ladders and platforms, enter confined spaces and wear all safety equipment. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions, climate extremes are found in all areas of the plant. Frequently works near machinery with moving parts and vibration. Regularly exposed to strong odors and the sight of blood. Frequent exposure to cleaning and sanitation chemicals, hazardous material, and waste, as well as fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
