About the opportunity
Amentum is leading a joint venture (JV) delivering a Framework Contract for the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), providing intellectual support services to the nuclear decommissioning programme across multiple European sites.
The JV supports JRC in accelerating decommissioning and waste management activities through provision of technical and programme support services, including:
Project and programme management
Licensing
Radioactive waste management
Radiation protection
Decommissioning and nuclear engineering
Worksite management and safety
Non-nuclear engineering
Facility supervision and quality assurance
For the JRC Ispra site (Northern Italy), we are seeking Waste Managers / Radioactive Waste Specialists across multiple experience levels.
The role supports JRC in the management of radioactive waste across the decommissioning programme, including waste characterisation, treatment, storage, and compliance with regulatory requirements. This is a client-facing position, providing technical and operational support services rather than direct execution of waste handling activities.
Responsibilities include supporting waste management strategies, coordinating technical activities, and ensuring alignment with regulatory and programme requirements.
Key responsibilities
Support the development and implementation of radioactive waste management strategies, including:
o waste classification, characterisation and inventory management
o treatment, conditioning, storage and disposal pathways
o alignment with regulatory and site-specific requirements
Provide technical support to JRC waste management activities, including:
o supervision and coordination of waste retrieval, treatment and conditioning operations
o assessment of waste management facilities and processes
o review and update of waste management procedures and systems
Support preparation and review of technical documentation, including:
o waste management plans and procedures
o waste acceptance criteria (WAC) and compliance documentation
o inventory records and reporting documentation
Contribute to waste tracking and data management, including:
o maintenance and verification of waste inventories
o support to waste information systems and reporting tools
Coordinate interfaces with related disciplines, including:
o decommissioning activities (waste generation and flows)
o radiation protection
o licensing and regulatory compliance
Support JRC in ensuring compliance with:
o national and European regulations
o site licence conditions and waste acceptance requirements
Contribute to programme reporting and governance, including:
o KPI tracking related to waste management
o identification and management of risks and issues
o input to structured reporting and technical reviews
Operate within a multi-stakeholder environment, supporting coordination between:
o JRC (client)
o JV partners
o subcontractors and waste management operators
Level and experience alignment
This role is open to candidates across different experience levels. Successful candidates will be aligned to project roles in accordance with contract requirements:
Junior / early career: up to ~6 years experience
Middle level: typically 6–12 years experience
Senior level: typically 12–20 years experience
Expert level: 20+ years experience
Deployment into specific project roles will depend on experience, qualifications and client approval requirements.
Requirements
Experience in radioactive waste management or related nuclear field
Experience supporting or delivering work in regulated environments
Knowledge of:
o radioactive waste classification, characterisation and treatment processes
o waste conditioning, storage and disposal routes
o regulatory frameworks for radioactive waste management
Understanding of waste management systems and processes within nuclear facilities
Ability to contribute to technical documentation and reporting
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
Relevant degree (engineering, environmental science, nuclear science or related discipline) or equivalent experience
Ability to work full-time on-site in Ispra, Lombardy (Italy)
English language proficiency (minimum B2 level)

Experience with radioactive waste management facilities or operations
Experience with waste acceptance criteria and disposal pathways
Experience interfacing with regulators or licensing processes
