Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is the operation of equipment and vehicles used in the collection, processing, disposal, recycling, and/or reuse of waste products on University property. This position will be responsible for operating various types of waste management vehicles, including the front-load garbage truck, rear load refuse truck, tipper-body trucks, dump trucks, and other large equipment involved in the waste management process to include skid steers, loaders, tractors, etc. The position will be responsible for the safe transport of equipment and materials. Physical handling and collection of waste materials will be a requirement of this position. Materials include trash, recycling, compostable material, construction and demolition debris, universal waste, and confidential shredding material.

In addition to waste management responsibilities, this position will also be responsible for operating street/parking lot sweepers. Assisting other divisions of Landscape Services will be required of this position, including grounds and moving operations. Snow removal in an assigned area will be a responsibility of this position.

Must possess necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment. Must possess a valid Vehicle Operator’s License. Commercial Driver’s License endorsement is required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.

Essential Job Functions

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • This position will function as a vehicle operator to help maintain Appalachian State University’s main campus as well as all satellite locations.
  • This position will be responsible for assisting the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor with inter-campus moves, operating vehicles used for daily collection of campus waste, assisting with athletic requests, street sweeping, installing signs, repairing fencing, assisting the Turf Manager with turf maintenance (synthetic and real), assisting other crews (Horticultural Specialist) with special requests.
  • During the winter months, this position is responsible for all aspects of snow removal, including: shoveling, blowing snow, and removal by truck, tractor, backhoe, and skid steer etc.
  • This person will be responsible for minor vehicle maintenance, greasing, checking fluid levels, and maintenance on tools and equipment used in the normal course of landscape maintenance responsibilities.
  • Ability to operate university-owned vehicles with a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
Employee should be able to operate the standard landscape maintenance equipment and tools used in the daily operation of landscape maintenance. Must possess necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment. Sufficient experience to operate assigned vehicles or equipment.

Graduation from two or four year institution with degree in sustainability, environmental science, or other related course of study.

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Knowledge-Technical: Safely and skillfully operates specialized vehicles and/or equipment in the performance of recurring tasks with limited variety and established parameters. Examples of vehicles and/or equipment operated at the Journey level may include but are not limited to: tractor trailer, bulldozer, backhoe, hydrogeological drilling equipment. Or, safely and skillfully operates standard vehicles and/or equipment (as noted at the Contributing level) in combination with considerable independence and variation in assignments, requiring a good understanding of organizational objectives. Plan and decide on best routes and schedules according to broad guidelines/parameters. Make decisions concerning weight and load distribution of cargo. Accurately maintain records related to load weight specifications, cargo inventory, custody of court-secured individuals, route reports, and vehicle/equipment maintenance. Performs minor preventive maintenance. Troubleshoots equipment/mechanical problems and recognizes cause of problems.

Client/Customer Service: Develops and maintains effective working relationships both within and outside of immediate work unit. Deals calmly and professionally with difficult situations or passengers and handles complaints respectfully. Receives and gives feedback calmly and professionally.

Safety & Health Compliance: Identifies and resolves potential safety problems and unsafe work practices; warns others of potential hazards. Shows other employees safe ways to perform job tasks or use of equipment. Informs employees of safety information. Incorporates accident prevention and corrective measures in all activities. Regularly assesses safety conditions; participates in safety inspections and drills; identifies potential hazards; and resolves problems. Demonstrates complete knowledge of established safety policies and procedures and applies to work activities. Responds to emergency situations following appropriate procedures.

Work Schedule/Hours
6:00 am – 3:00 pm; Monday through Friday. Position requires weekend coverage for waste management servicing on a scheduled basis. This position is subject to call back anytime should emergencies occur. Designated as MANDATORY, this position is expected to be available for work during university emergencies, closings and adverse weather conditions.

Weekend work and hours other than normal schedule may be required to accomplish assigned duties. Position is subject to call in, call back or stay over on off schedule hours and weekends should emergencies occur. This position is expected to work, as needed, in the event of staffing shortages, sporting events and/or other events on campus that require Landscape Department services. Supervisor assignment may be adjusted based on business/operational need.
