Job Description

Leidos has an opening for a Waste Management Technician at NASA Glenn Research Center’s Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio. The Waste Management Technician will support the Waste Management and Environmental teams and spill response program.

The Waste Management Technician will ensure proper management of hazardous materials, including the completion and review of waste profiles for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act ( RCRA) regulated hazardous waste, universal wastes, used oils, and infectious waste; TSCA regulated asbestos-containing materials, and PCBs. Role will include sampling of environmental media for characterization, stormwater management, Underground Storage Tank inspections, spill response, review of property and equipment for hazards prior to disposal, and DOT transportation services.

Must be available to work a flexible schedule and be on call.

Must be able to pass a Public Trust background investigation. U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residence is required due to length of investigation required for non-U.S. persons.

Additional support may include:

  • Inspections;
  • Waste characterizations;
  • Review and maintenance of shipping and disposal records;
  • Completion of reports (weekly, monthly and annual);
  • Property decontamination and remediation;
  • Coordinating subcontractors and jobs;
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Skills:

High school diploma and 5 years of experience required. Degree in chemistry, environmental science, or related field preferred with experience.

  • Ability to work under variable field conditions (weather, insects, and/or limited personnel and vehicle access).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite - in particular, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel - for presentations, reports, and other uses.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with many personalities, as the position involves interfacing with client and on-site personnel.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform continuous physical labor, including moving materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to evaluate problems as they arise; situational awareness; and understanding of how your actions could impact your Team’s overall goals and objectives.
  • Ability to follow prescribed safety procedures at all times while performing various duties.

Desired Experience:

  • OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER training
  • Prior experience working with hazardous materials, knowledge of RCRA disposal regulations, knowledge of DOT regulations, knowledge of BUSTR regulations.
  • Experience operating lift equipment, such as forklifts, straight trucks with lift gates, pallet jacks and drum dollies.

Preferred Experience:

A suitable applicant will be current in the following trainings or will have the ability to obtain the following within the first 90 days of employment.

  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training
  • U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) training
  • OSHA 29 CFR Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40-hour training
  • FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) trainings ICS-100, 200, 300, and 700

Pay Range:

Pay Range $40,300.00 - $72,850.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
