About the Role

As a Waste and Cleansing Driver, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality frontline environmental services across the city, helping to maintain clean, safe and welcoming public spaces. The role involves undertaking a wide range of cleansing duties, including street sweeping, litter picking, emptying litter bins, removing fly-tipping, cleaning graffiti and carrying out general street cleansing activities.

In addition, you will support the delivery of key service priorities, including the collection and removal of bulky waste items and carrying out essential maintenance of the city’s internal footpaths to ensure they remain safe, accessible and well maintained. You will work flexibly across a range of service areas depending on operational needs, including supporting refuse collection and other seasonal or reactive services.

The role includes operating vehicles and equipment safely, completing daily vehicle checks, and ensuring all work is carried out in line with health and safety requirements and Council standards. This is a physically demanding, outdoor role requiring the ability to work in all weather conditions, either as part of a team or independently, while maintaining high standards of service delivery and contributing to an efficient, responsive service that puts residents first.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A full UK driving licence for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (C1 entitlement desirable)
  • Experience of working in waste, cleansing, environmental or similar outdoor operational services
  • A good understanding of health and safety requirements and safe working practices
  • The ability to carry out physically demanding work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Experience of using tools, equipment and vehicles safely and effectively
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team, using initiative to complete tasks to a high standard
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with colleagues and members of the public
  • A flexible approach to work, including the ability to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays in line with service needs
  • A commitment to delivering high standards of customer care and contributing to a clean, safe and green environment
  • The ability to use handheld or digital devices to receive work instructions, record completed tasks and report issues accurately
