The WASH Assistant will support the implementation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities within Project HOPE’s Gaza Response program. In the context of active conflict, damaged infrastructure, overcrowded shelters, and increased public health risks, the WASH Assistant contributes to improving access to safe water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion services for affected populations.

The position provides operational and field-level support to WASH interventions in communities and supported health facilities. The WASH Assistant ensures activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in alignment with humanitarian standards, safeguarding principles, accountability to affected populations, and Do No Harm approaches.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support the implementation and follow-up of emergency WASH activities in targeted health facilities and communities, in line with Project HOPE standards and project requirements.

• Support WASH activities inside health care facilities, with a focus on Infection Prevention and Control, environmental hygiene, water supply, sanitation, waste management, and WASH service functionality.

• Provide day-to-day technical follow-up of cleaners in supported clinics, including cleaning schedules, proper use of cleaning materials, waste segregation, hand hygiene practices, and maintaining a safe and clean clinic environment.

• Monitor the availability and proper use of IPC, cleaning, hygiene, and WASH-related supplies inside supported health facilities, and report any gaps or stock concerns to the WASH Officer.

• Conduct regular field visits to health facilities and communities to monitor WASH conditions, identify gaps, document findings, and support follow-up on corrective actions.

• Assist in water quality testing, water monitoring, and safe water handling activities under the supervision of the WASH Officer.

• Support the installation, maintenance, and minor rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities in clinics and communities, as required

• Follow up on community-based WASH activities, including the work of Community Health Promoters, hygiene promotion sessions, community awareness activities, household visits, and community engagement initiatives.

• Support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of water trucking activities, including coordination with field teams, verification of water delivery, monitoring of water points, and reporting operational issues.

• Support the follow-up of WASH committees and community representatives to improve participation, feedback, and community engagement in WASH activities.

• Assist in conducting rapid WASH assessments at community and health facility levels, including data collection using WASH FIT tools and other assessment forms, and share findings with the WASH team.

• Assist in the distribution of hygiene kits, IPC items, cleaning materials, and other WASH-related supplies, ensuring proper documentation and accountability.

• Maintain accurate records of field activities, clinic follow-up visits, water trucking, distributions, awareness sessions, cleaners’ follow-up, and WASH/IPC observations in line with Project HOPE reporting requirements.

• Support coordination with clinic focal points, community representatives, service providers, and other relevant stakeholders during the implementation of WASH activities.

• Ensure that all activities are implemented in line with safeguarding, protection mainstreaming, accountability, and Do No Harm principles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Diploma or technical certification in Environmental Health, Water Management, Civil Works, Public Health, Engineering, or a related field.

• Minimum 1–2 years of experience supporting WASH, IPC, hygiene promotion, or community-based activities.

• Experience working in humanitarian or emergency settings is desirable.

• Basic knowledge of WASH in health care facilities, water quality, sanitation, waste management, and hygiene promotion principles.

• Ability to work in high-pressure and conflict-affected environments.

• Strong communication and community engagement skills

• Demonstrated commitment to humanitarian principles and safeguarding standards.

• Proficiency in English is preferable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience working in conflict-affected or hardship contexts such as Gaza.

• Familiarity with Sphere standards, humanitarian WASH guidelines, and basic WASH in health care facilities standards.

• Experience supporting emergency WASH activities, IPC-related activities, or outbreak prevention measures.

• Basic technical training or practical experience in water quality testing, safe water handling, or sanitation facility maintenance.

Physical demands:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be mobile in an office environment and able to use standard office equipment.

• Must be able to communicate in verbal and written form and must be able to travel internationally.

• Project HOPE employees may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship.”

Work environment

• Typical office environment with exposure to a minimal noise level.

• Emergency deployments may be in resource-deprived environments with austere living conditions.

• Travel for extended periods may be by air and/or other modes of transportation.

• While international travel is not a regular part of every job, programmatic needs may require it intermittently.

• Project HOPE employees may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship.”
