Summary

Under direction, is responsible for coordinating magistration efforts in the City Magistrate and coordinating with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Exercises no supervision.

Work Schedule

Training will take place on all three shifts:

  • 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
  • 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.

Permanent schedule after training will be based on business needs but will be nights and weekends. This position supports 24/7 operation, which involves shift-work and rotating work schedules, including weekends and holidays.

Examples of duties

  • Provides assistance to the public, and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Determines priority magistration for judge and moves processes in a timely manner.
  • Intakes and updates municipal court violations when arrested party arrives in the City Magistrate/Detention Center.
  • Utilizes financial, employment, and application information to compile and verify data regarding defendant's ability to pay fines and court costs.
  • Calculates initial payment based on defendant's financial status, schedules payment arrangements and explains terms and conditions of payment plan.
  • Collects outstanding fines/costs using established credit card procedures or transports defendant to a fine payment facility.
  • Directs and facilitates phone access for parties to obtain commercial bonds and/or pay fines.
  • Performs administrative duties including but not limited to report.
  • writing, activity documentation, statistical reporting, case processing and filing.
  • Provides clear, concise, and accurate information to the judge, public, and law enforcement officials.
  • Reviews National Crime Information Center, Texas Crime Information Center, Texas Department of Public Safety (NCIC/TCIC/DPS) databases for criminal histories, warrant records and driving records.
  • Updates NCIC/TCIC databases with warrant records and conviction records reported to DPS.
  • Prepares payment agreements based on court orders, interview, and application information; files payment agreements; monitors and maintains contract records and payment schedules.
  • Prepares delinquent/warning notices to defendants for mail payment.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Two (2) years of experience in administrative/office support.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.
  • Valid Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center (TCIC/NCIC) Certification within one (1) year of employment and re-certified yearly.
  • Must maintain Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System Access (TLETS) eligibility for continued employment in position (TLETS provides access to TCIC and NCIC).
  • Must obtain the Municipal Court Clerk Certification, Level I, within twenty-four (24) months from date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Criminal justice experience and prior shiftwork.
  • Experience with cash handling duties.
  • One year of data entry experience.
  • Knowledge of MS 365.
  • Ability to multitask prioritize competing needs, and communicate effectively with judges, law enforcement, nursing staff, detention personnel, and the public.
  • Must successfully test for and pass the Texas Municipal Court Clerk Level I certification within 24 months of hire.

Applicant Information

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
