VP, Protection, India (24 months contract in Singapore)

The Role

The VP, Protection, India is responsible for the leadership and management of the front-office activities of Pacific Life Re’s Protection line of business in India. The incumbent will be a member of the Asia Protection Leadership Committee and plays a key role supporting the Global Protection Executive Committee to manage the global Protection business. The incumbent will be a part of the broader Pacific Life Re Leadership Team as well.

In performing the specific responsibilities of this role, the incumbent will work closely with Pricing, Underwriting and Claims and will support these leaders to manage their respective functions, in collaboration with the global functional leaders. The incumbent will be expected to set a clear strategy for India in line with the global protection strategy and the company’s risk appetite for India.

Duties

To work with direct / indirect reports and UnderwriteMe colleagues to develop (and regularly refine) and articulate market strategy, in line with the global Protection strategy. This includes:

  • Market strategy
  • Client strategy
  • Long-term operational model strategy – to establish onshore presence in India

To work with direct / indirect reports and UnderwriteMe colleagues to implement market strategy, including;

  • Supporting teams to develop clear plans to assist the execution of strategies and holding them to account for delivery
  • Coaching and developing the team to achieve team and company goals as well as individual performance standards and objectives;

Ensure a collaborative environment exists within the teams, including:

  • By participating in the PMLC and participation in other forums, to ensure that there is a clear flow of quality client data and information from the market teams to the Division Business Services (DBS) teams thereby allowing the business to be effectively and proactively managed.
  • To champion collaboration with UnderwriteMe and the Strategic Analytics team to develop a market comparative advantage.

In line with the global Pacific Life Re marketing and branding strategy, develop and grow Pacific Life Re and UnderwriteMe’s brand, including being seen in the industry as an “executive face” of Pacific Life Re. Ensure that Pacific Life Re is “close” to all our clients, with clear relationship maps and regular client engagement.

To ensure that, for all activities within their team, a sound corporate governance framework is in place and that appropriate internal control systems are in place to guard against operational risk and ensure the prevention of fraud.

The incumbent is also expected to ensure that a culture of risk management is in place such that the teams exhibit strong risk culture and awareness with open/healthy challenge and a proactive approach to identifying, fixing and learning from control failures.

Support the MVP, Protection, Asia to ensure that the regulatory requirements of the Singapore regulated entity and India, that are relevant to the functions under the incumbent’s leadership, are met.

Qualifications & Expertise

  • Deep experience in operating in market facing role(s) in (re)insurance. Experience in the markets that PL Re focuses on would be preferred.
  • Deep understanding of the technical basis of reinsurance business, with a proven ability to understand and question pricing and / or capital bases.
  • Ability to set and deliver compelling strategies in a challenging business environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make high-quality decisions in the face of ambiguity.
  • Strong, leadership, managerial and influencing skills and an ability to operate at all levels.
  • Proven experience as a senior executive and strong operational manager of a substantial unit within the reinsurance, insurance or broad financial services sectors.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of risk frameworks and controls.
  • Familiarity with the demands of the changing regulatory landscape.
  • Proven track record of delivering major strategic change programmes.
