Job Description

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Directs the activities necessary to maintain and repair light vehicle and heavy equipment assets of the United States Antarctic Program.

  • Sets deadlines and establishes the sequence of work operations to be followed; maintains balanced workloads by shifting assignments, workers, and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations.

  • Reviews and analyzes work accomplishments, cost, and utilization of subordinates to evaluate work progress, control costs, and anticipate and avoid possible problems by recommending corrective action to upper-level management personnel.

  • Ensures all employees are trained for the specific task assigned.

  • Manages budget and remains within parameters.

  • Position supervises the work of all mechanics, skilled and unskilled labor engaged in the repair and upkeep of USAP Capital Equipment.

  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all assets

  • Maintains vehicles and equipment in accordance withmanufacturers’ recommendations and industry standards.

  • Determines annual re-supply requirements and ensures all requisitions are submittedin accordance with schedules, guidelines and policies in order to meet shipping deadlines for annual supply vessel delivery.

  • Position monitors all work in-progress to ensure quality, timelycompletion and control of material.

  • Incumbent provides labor and material support to USAP field camps and other stations as directed.

  • Performs follow up inspections as required on equipment.

  • Documents work order progress, maintains records of shop activities and prepares and submits reports as requested

  • Incumbent handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management guidelines and policies.

  • VMF Supervisor will perform duties in support of Operations Division metrics and will provide training and orientation for subordinate employees on performance, documentation and activities that affect the achievement Operations Division metrics.

  • Adequately, accurately and honestly track all data related to metrics.

  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics can be directly or indirectly affected by this position's activities.

  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals and provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Performs other duties as required

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses

  • Bachelor’s degree requiredAn additional four years of experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree

  • Minimum of six years’ experience in vehicle maintenance with an additional three years of experience at the supervisory level

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Requires knowledge of mechanical theory applying to commercial and special purpose design vehicles and equipment, using lubricants and tools, methods of hoisting an handling heavy mechanisms, internal combustion engines and electrical and hydraulics systems.

  • Must possess critical problem solving and decision-making ability.

  • Must be detail oriented and able to shift focus with changing priorities

  • Must have ability to multitask and work with frequent interruptions

  • Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Two years training at a technical school

  • Experience with fleet maintenance and/or fleet management experience

  • Previous experience with remote polar operations.

  • Experience with Fuel Master (or equivalent fuel management software)

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlookand PowerPoint)

  • Experience with an asset management and electronic corrective maintenance program (Maximo preferred).

Physical and/or Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
