Job Description

IN A NUTSHELL...

Bellroy is stepping into a new chapter, our very own retail stores. With multiple locations opening across Australia and the US, we're building something special from the ground up, and we're looking for a skilled Visual Merchandiser to help write the playbook. No inherited systems. No "this is how we've always done it." Just a global brand with an obsession for design, ready to translate that into physical spaces that outfit customers for their daily journeys.

You'll report to our Chief Creative Officer and work alongside a tight-knit creative team of designers, writers, filmmakers and photographers, all making things in-house. You'll be a valuable connection between our stores and the people who run them, with additional opportunities to support trade shows, events and photoshoots baked into the role.

We're stocked in 1,200+ wholesale doors globally – from Apple to REI, Nordstrom to David Jones – so we're not new to retail. But owned retail? That's fresh territory. And we're looking for someone who wants to help pave the way.

YOU COULD BE THE ONE IF YOU...

  • Bring 4-5 years of visual merchandising experience, having worked across a mix of branded, wholesale and concession environments
  • Can build to-scale planograms and display mock-ups using Adobe Creative Suite, 3D software or the occasional physical prototype
  • Can write VM guidelines that store teams can pick up and execute on the floor, fast
  • Are comfortable managing fixture programs end-to-end, from design and prototyping through to production and install, including liaising with manufacturers and suppliers
  • Have experience translating digital campaign assets into physical environments, looking for ways to innovate beyond traditional posters and strut cards
  • Think in all five senses – knowing how to create immersive worlds that tell a story
  • Apply equal parts art and science to your work – leading with creativity, but backing it up with curiosity and logic. Always keen to know if your work is shifting behaviour in-store
  • Thrive on collaboration across creative, marketing, production and operations and enjoy solving problems that haven't been tackled before
  • Are happy to flex your styling skills across photoshoots and events when the moment calls for it

IF YOU WERE HERE LAST WEEK, HERE'S SOME THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE DONE...

  • Workshopped a seasonal VM concept with the creative team, mapping out how a new product launch could come to life across our store network
  • Surveyed our sales team to understand pain points with our current fixtures, then implemented a new program – from design to prototyping, production to install – that improves how our fixtures (especially freestanding ones) display products of varying sizes in store
  • Drafted a VM standards guide that creates a unified merchandising system across product formats. From wallets on shelves to tech accessories on prongs, bags on hang bars to luggage on plinths
  • Worked with retail partners to execute a VM directive for concession stores and pop-ups internationally, including planograms, signage and storytelling opportunities
  • Jumped on a call with our fixture manufacturers in China to resolve an issue, or chased quotes from local print suppliers for an upcoming campaign launch
  • Spent time in our physical stores observing a recent activation – noting what worked, what didn't, and what we'd do differently – then shared those insights back with the broader team
  • Put your stylist hat on for a lifestyle photoshoot on location, or approached an e-commerce studio shoot from a propping perspective
  • Pulled together a quick budget breakdown for Q3 props and materials
  • Attended Creative Labs (your team's weekly experimentation session) and shared a few global retail trends you'd been tracking

LOCATION & HOURS

This role is based at our studio in Collingwood, Melbourne. We work regular business hours, with flexibility built in for the rhythm of retail – store visits, trade shows, and travel to our US locations as needed.

We're a team that values being together (the energy is better, the ideas are sharper), but we also trust you to manage your time and location based on what the work requires.

WHY WORK FOR BELLROY?

Bellroy started around a kitchen table in 2010, born from two places we love: Bells Beach and Fitzroy. Our purpose back then is the same as it is now: to gear people up so they can move in the good direction. Whether that's work or play; near or far.

We're an Australian-born brand with a crew that spans the globe, with 25 countries represented in our Melbourne HQ alone. We're thinkers and makers, designers and analysts, optimists and pragmatists, and we believe the best ideas come from bringing genuinely different perspectives to the table.

We've been a certified B Corp since 2015, which means we use the power of business to help solve social and environmental problems. It's not a badge, it's a way of operating that is deeply ingrained in our systems. So even if your experience isn't an exact match but you feel you have something special to contribute, we'd love to hear from you.

Sound like you? We'd love to hear from you. Please share your portfolio and resume.

About Bellroy

Bellroy puts its heart, soul and countless design hours into helping the world carry with greater simplicity and ease. Every piece has been deeply considered to help you get the best of life’s little moments.

In the early 2000s, as slim tailoring became popular, bulky wallets couldn’t hide anymore. So, a team of product designers and creatives (who also happened to be friends) sat around a kitchen table in Bells Beach, Australia, to design a slim wallet with fewer layers of leather and better card positioning. The release of this product in 2010 signaled the birth of the Bellroy brand, and we’ve come a fair way since then...

We recognized pretty early on that we could use business as a force for good. So, as a certified B Corp, we constantly pursue better ways to source our leathers, reduce our impact on the environment and make sure our products last as long as possible.

Our range of carry goods has moved beyond pockets and includes solutions for your tech, work accessories and more – right down to the humble set of keys. Because as long as there are things to carry through our lives, we want to find better ways to store, protect and carry them.
