The Visual Journalist is responsible for capturing, editing, and producing high-quality visual content for The Gainesville Times and other Metro Market Media (MMM) properties. This position plays a critical role in supporting the newsroom’s digital and multimedia storytelling efforts by producing compelling visual content for breaking news, feature stories, community events, and special projects. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong technical skills, a keen editorial eye, and the flexibility to respond to news as it happens.
What You Will Do
- Shoot professional-quality video and photos for news stories, feature segments, live events, and promotional content across digital and social media platforms
- Edit raw footage into polished, publish-ready video packages and retouch/enhance photographs for digital and print use, utilizing industry-standard software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop, Lightroom).
- Respond promptly to breaking news assignments, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to ensure timely coverage
- Collaborate closely with reporters, editors, photographers, and the digital team to develop multimedia story packages
- Operate and maintain company-provided video equipment, if applicable, including cameras, audio recording devices, lighting kits, and tripods.
- Manage and organize digital media assets, including video and photo files, project archives, and libraries of raw footage and images.
- Produce content optimized for multiple platforms including web, social media, and broadcast where applicable; upload finalized assets to Anvil and post to company social media channels if applicable.
- Assist with live streaming of community events, press conferences, and breaking news situations, if applicable.
- Ensure all video and photo content meets Metro Market Media’s editorial and quality standards
- Stay current with emerging photo editing and video production technologies, techniques, and industry trends
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Managing Editor to meet the ongoing needs of the newsroom

QualificationsWhat We’re Looking For
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Film Production, Broadcast Journalism, Multimedia Communications, or a related field preferred
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in videography, video editing, or multimedia production; newsroom experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency in video and photo editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop, and Lightroom is required.
- Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit under tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment
- Strong understanding of photo and video composition, lighting, audio capture, and color correction
- Experience with motion graphics, animation, or graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe After Effects, Photoshop) is a plus
- Portfolio or demo reel showcasing previous work
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in managing digital media assets
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented newsroom environment

Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Work is performed in both office/studio and field environments; frequent travel to assignment locations throughout NE Georgia is required
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, crowds, and unpredictable environments while covering live events and breaking news
- Regularly required to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and move quickly while carrying photo/video equipment
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Extended periods of sitting may be required during editing sessions
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for field assignments
Additional Requirements
- Must maintain flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays — breaking news does not follow a set schedule, and this position requires the willingness and ability to respond on short notice
- Travel to assignment locations and other Metro Market Media properties as needed; mileage reimbursement provided
- Must adhere to all Metro Market Media policies including the Business Conduct Policy, Confidential Information Policy, and Equipment Use Policy as outlined in the MMM Employee Handbook
- Employment is contingent upon successfully passing applicable background checks as required by MMM policy
