The Visiting Scholar provides technical and scholarly support for the barley breeding and genetics program, contributing to laboratory, greenhouse, and field operations. This role supports all stages of crop production, data collection, and sample processing, with significant involvement during peak planting and harvesting seasons.

Essential Duties

  • Support field operations including seed packaging, planting, plot maintenance, note-taking, data entry, harvesting, and post-harvest processing
  • Assist with greenhouse operations, including planting, maintaining, and harvesting plant materials
  • Conduct analytical laboratory procedures on field-derived samples
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental data and observations
  • Assist in the setup, operation, and maintenance of field equipment such as tractors, planters, combine harvesters, threshers, seed treaters, and other small farm equipment
  • Ensure proper handling and organization of plant materials and research samples across lab, greenhouse, and field environments
  • Collaborate with faculty and research staff to support breeding program objectives and seasonal workflow demands

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in plant science, agronomy, biology, or a related field
  • Experience working with plants in field and greenhouse environments
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor conditions during peak field seasons
  • Strong organizational and data management skills
