Job Description

The Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language, beginning August 1, 2027. This is a three-year position and may be renewable pending performance review. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in English. A PhD in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, TESOL, or a related field is required; ABD considered.

The successful applicant will be able to make substantive contributions to teaching and advising graduate students in our MA programs in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Of particular interest are candidates whose research, teaching, and professional experiences focus on second language development in instructional contexts, including the teaching of culture. Demonstrated experience in language teacher education/training is highly desirable. Candidates who cannot provide evidence of experience in English as a second language instruction will not be considered. Preference may be given to applicants who also have a demonstrated ability to teach language and culture courses in one or more of our undergraduate programs, especially in one of our growth areas (e.g., Korean Studies, Global Cultures and Emerging Technologies).

Teaching load is 3+3, complemented by an expectation to engage in student recruitment, advising, and other activities to help develop the MA programs in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition at CMU, as the department seeks to expand them. Course releases may be negotiated with the Department Head, depending on staffing needs, program administration and advising duties.
