Job Description

The Department of Molecular Biosciences (MBS) at the University of South Florida invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction. This is a non-tenure earning appointment for the Fall 2026 semester to begin August 7, 2026, and conclude December 19, 2026. There is no research component associated. Hiring salary is $25,000 for the Fall 2026 semester.


The Department of Molecular Biosciences is seeking an Instructor to manage our upper division laboratory courses, specifically Cell Biology (10 sections of PCB3023L – Cell Biology laboratory) and General Genetics (14 sections of PCB3063L – General Genetics Laboratory), and teach a large enrollment lower-division lecture course (BSC2010 – Cellular Processes). We expect to hire someone with broad training and an engaging personality in supporting laboratory and classroom experiences for undergraduates.


The Department typically offers ~24 sections of these upper division laboratory courses in the Fall semester, taught by graduate teaching assistants. The successful candidate will be able to interact with faculty and graduate students to implement the pre-prepared laboratory course curricula for the department.

Laboratory Specific Duties:
Coordinate existing upper division laboratory courses in Cell Biology and General Genetics. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards for laboratory operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards. Responsible for ensuring laboratory safety compliance.


Lead laboratory training and supervise activities of the graduate student teaching assistants (GTA). Coordinate GTA weekly meetings to provide support, and instructional and laboratory resources for upcoming laboratory sessions. Provide GTA’s with information regarding laboratory procedures, location and proper use of materials, and the operation of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related field. Experience teaching in upper division biology laboratory courses and large enrollment lecture-based courses is expected. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. Effective interpersonal and supervisory skills are required. Evidence of organization, management and leadership skills is required.


Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate will have experience in cell culture maintenance and handling as well as supervision of graduate students as teaching assistants.
