VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN HISTORY

2022-23 ACADEMIC YEAR

Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position in early U.S. History (1776 to 1877) with a specialty in African American history for 2022-2023, with possibility of renewal for the subsequent academic year.

The position requires teaching two history courses in Fall 2022 (African Diaspora in the U.S. to 1877 and U.S. History to 1865) as well as teaching a section of the College’s interdisciplinary Core 1 according to a shared syllabus. In Spring 2023, two courses will be offered that will reflect the visiting professor’s specialties. Advising senior theses is also expected.

Scripps College is one of the seven members of The Claremont Colleges cluster located 35 miles east of Los Angeles. In keeping with its ongoing commitment to build and support a diverse and equitable academic community, Scripps College actively encourages applications from women and members of historically underrepresented groups. Preference will be given to applicants committed to improving higher education for underrepresented students.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the College’s goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students. Towards that end, applicants should submit a brief (one page) statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit the following materials: cover letter, CV, names of two references, article-length writing sample, diversity statement, and teaching portfolio (including sample syllabi and evidence of teaching experience and excellence). For matters other than the submission of material, contact Corey Tazzara, Chair, History Search Committee, at ctazzara@scrippscollege.edu

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
