Biological Science

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith invites applications for biologist. This one-academic year Visiting Assistant Professor position (renewable up to 2 years) will begin August 2026 and will be responsible for teaching a 15-hour load per semester and to be a mentor to undergraduate students.
The Department of Biological Sciences is an interdisciplinary department that offers undergraduate degrees in Biology and Biology with Teaching Licensure, as well as a Minor in Biology. This position, renewable for up to 2 years, will serve to address the increase in students in both Biology and Health Sciences. Courses may include Biological Sciences and Lab for non-majors; Human Anatomy and lab; and Introduction to Cell Biology. The position reports to the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences.
Required Education and/or Work Experience: Minimum qualifications include a doctorate in Biology or related field.
Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Publication record in areas of Biology, Anatomy, or Cell Biology. Prior teaching experience (with student evaluation).
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach 15 credit hours per semester from the following:
Biological Sciences and Laboratory
Human Anatomy and Laboratory
Introduction to Cell Biology
Maintain office hours to serve UAFS students
Assess and evaluate student learning
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates.
Requires consistent on-time attendance.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:
Demonstrated knowledge of biology, including experience teaching anatomy
Good organizational skills and timeliness in responding to student inquiries
Ability to respond to needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds in a multicultural environment
Ability to deliver course outcomes and content through a variety of teaching/learning styles
Ability to use technology effectively in teaching
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with students and colleagues

Working Relationships: Work with a dynamic team of faculty, staff, and students in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment. May possibly have contact with vendors, personnel from other agencies and institutions, and the general public.

Special Job Dimensions: Work performed primarily in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally stands and walks. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Employee occasionally lifts items up to 50 pounds. Routine work schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm with potential for 1 evening course per semester.
