The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for advancing The New York Public Library’s (NYPL) mission and priorities through the promotion of its services, resources, locations, collections, programs, events, and exhibitions to a broad array of audiences and communities. The department positions NYPL as a cultural and educational leader and seeks to attract and engage new audiences across New York City and around the world.

The Video Producer develops, films, and edits video content for the Library's various channels with an emphasis on social media. The position also manages broader Communications content needs and multimedia workflows to ensure a cohesive brand presence across all platforms. This includes providing basic audio production for projects.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:
  • Short-form video strategy and production for NYPL's various social media channels
  • End-to-end video and audio production for the Communications and Marketing team
  • The management of the departmental production calendar for all video and assigned multimedia projects
  • Vendor relationships related to video and audio production, including coordination of external partners, timelines, and deliverables
Teach:
  • Video best practices to staff who assist in video production
  • Colleagues how to spot and pitch engaging video ideas
Learn:
  • How to create compelling video content in NYPL’s voice
  • NYPL’s many offerings, from neighborhood branches to research divisions, and understand the video needs of different departments in the organization
Improve:
  • Capacity for social-first video
  • Video production and multimedia workflows across NYPL
  • The organization, storage, and tracking of internal video footage and multimedia assets
  • Tracking and visibility for video projects across Communications divisions, including Schomburg, Library for the Performing Arts, Research, and branches
Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:
  • Create video content as assigned by colleagues
  • Learn the video, social and multimedia needs of NYPL and familiarize themselves with the different branches, divisions, and research centers
  • Begin developing relationships across NYPL to source content for video
3 months, this person will:
  • Understand NYPL's unique voice and content streams
  • Pitch and create video content for NYPL independently
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Own video production for the Communications & Marketing Team
  • Use video to increase engagement across flagship NYPL social media accounts
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Social Media Manager, the Video Producer will:
  • Lead end-to-end video production for NYPL, including concepting, scripting, filming, editing, captioning, and basic motion graphics
  • Develop video ideas and formats based on NYPL initiatives, exhibitions, programs, cultural moments, and social media trends
  • Film video using a variety of equipment, including phone, DSLR, and/or mirrorless cameras, gimbals, microphones, lights, and other associated tools
  • Edit video and create basic motion graphics and captions using Adobe Premiere and After Effects
  • Manage the video production calendar, tracking deadlines, deliverables, priorities, and cross-departmental needs
  • Manage NYPL’s YouTube and Vimeo accounts
  • Collaborate with teams across the Library and manage occasional external vendors, agencies, and freelancers to develop cohesive, engaging video content that supports NYPL’s broader digital presence and large-scale multimedia needs
  • Performs other related duties as needed

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of additional related experience
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience producing short-form, narrative video content
  • Experience filming on a variety of video production equipment including phones, DSLRs, gimbals, microphones, and lights
  • Experience managing video projects from concept through delivery, including collaborating with stakeholders, balancing timelines, and incorporating feedback
Required Skills
  • Strong familiarity with social media video best practices and trends on Instagram Reels and TikTok.
  • Proficiency in video editing software including Adobe Premiere and After Effects
  • Basic motion graphics and image editing
  • Basic audio editing (e.g. using Adobe Audition for leveling and cutting audio for podcasts or exhibition guides)
  • Knowledge of best practices for video production and accessibility
  • Ability to adapt voice to various NYPL channels
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Interest in emerging products/tools
  • Familiarity with the publishing, library, literary, or cultural fields
