Job Description

University of Minnesota Physicians (M Physicians) is seeking a Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA) to provide senior physician leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for medical staff affairs and clinical performance across the academic medical center and its hospital-based services.

Dually reporting to the Chief Medical Officer of Fairview Health Services and CEO of M Physicians, the VPMA is responsible for advancing clinical quality and safety, physician engagement, professional practice standards, and alignment between the clinical enterprise, academic mission, and organizational strategy, resource allocation, and regulatory requirements.

As a core member of the UMMC/MCH executive leadership team, the VPMA will:

  • Partner closely with physician, nursing, operational, financial, and academic leaders to set and achieve institutional goals related to patient care, experience, equity, access, and value.
  • Guide the development and implementation of systems, policies, and processes that support high-performing clinical teams, promote continuous improvement, ensure regulatory readiness, and strengthen the integration of clinical care, education, and research.
  • Serve as the principal medical staff executive, fostering a culture of trust, accountability, professionalism, and collaboration across a diverse, mixed medical staff that includes employed/aligned faculty, community physicians, and advanced practice providers.
  • Be accountable for the effective functioning of medical staff governance, professional review, and credentialing systems.
  • Play a critical role in shaping the future of UMMC/MCH by ensuring excellence in clinical care delivery, effective medical staff governance, strong physician leadership pipelines, and alignment between institutional strategy and the missions of patient care, teaching, and discovery.
  • Act as a visible ambassador for the medical center, strengthening relationships with the University of Minnesota Medical School, M Health Fairview, the Board and its committees, and the broader medical community, while advocating for patients, learners, and clinicians.

The role requires an accomplished physician executive who can lead through influence and authority, manage complexity, and serve as an effective change agent within a matrixed academic health system environment.

FTE:

  • 0.8 FTE, 32 hours per week

Compensation:

  • Compensation for this position is determined in accordance with the selected candidate’s Clinical Service Unit (CSU) compensation plan and clinical specialty. This leadership role is expected to be supported through protected administrative time, with a corresponding adjustment to clinical full-time equivalent (cFTE) to reflect administrative responsibilities for the selectee.

Qualifications:

Work Experience

  • Ten or more years of progressive leadership experience in a complex health system or hospital (required)
  • A successful track record of leading and supportive enterprise-wide improvement initiatives (required)
  • Track record of effective physician engagement (required)
  • Faculty at the University of Minnesota Medical School

Education

  • Medical Degree (M.D. or D.O.) (required)
  • Masters in Healthcare Administration or Masters in Business Administration (preferred)

Licenses/Certification

  • Licensed physician in the State of Minnesota (required)
  • Board certified in a medical specialty (required)
