GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Vice President of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) provides strategic financial leadership for the organization. The Vice President is responsible for enterprise forecasting, budgeting, financial modeling, performance reporting, revenue analytics, provider compensation, and decision support.
The Vice President partners closely with executive leadership, physician leaders, operations, revenue cycle management, accounting, human resources, and business development to translate clinical and operational activity into actionable financial insights. The role oversees the financial performance of ophthalmology practices, ambulatory surgery centers, optical operations, and ancillary services while ensuring accurate revenue recognition and effective provider compensation administration.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Planning and Forecasting
- Lead the organization’s annual budgeting, long-range planning, and periodic forecasting processes.
- Develop integrated financial models covering revenue, operating expenses, capital expenditures, cash flow, and earnings performance.
- Maintain rolling forecasts that reflect changes in patient volumes, provider capacity, reimbursement, staffing, surgical utilization, and market conditions.
- Establish standardized budgeting and forecasting processes across practices, ambulatory surgery centers, optical locations, and corporate departments.
- Evaluate actual performance against budget, forecast, prior periods, and established benchmarks.
- Identify emerging financial risks and opportunities and recommend timely corrective actions.
- Develop scenario models for provider recruitment, new locations, service-line expansion, capital investments, acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives.
- Ensure financial plans align with the organization’s strategic, clinical, and operational priorities.
Revenue Recognition and Revenue Analytics
- Partner with accounting and revenue cycle leadership to support accurate and timely recognition of patient service and other operating revenue in accordance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies.
- Develop revenue models incorporating gross charges, contractual allowances, payer adjustments, denials, bad debt, refunds, and expected collections.
- Analyze professional, facility, optical, premium-service, and ancillary revenue streams.
- Monitor revenue performance by provider, location, service line, procedure, payer, and legal entity.
- Evaluate reimbursement trends and the financial effects of payer contracts, coding changes, fee schedules, denials, authorization requirements, and changes in payer mix.
- Reconcile operational activity—including patient visits, procedures, surgical cases, diagnostic testing, and optical sales—to recorded and forecasted revenue.
- Support estimates and analyses related to accounts receivable valuation, contractual adjustments, variable consideration, and revenue reserves.
- Partner with revenue cycle management to improve charge capture, coding accuracy, collections, denial prevention, and net revenue realization.
- Establish clear methodologies and documentation for revenue assumptions used in forecasts and management reporting.
- Evaluate the financial impact of changes in Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and value-based reimbursement programs.
Provider Compensation
- Lead the financial administration, modeling, forecasting, and analysis of provider compensation programs.
- Oversee provider compensation under productivity, collections, salary, draw, bonus, and other incentive arrangements.
- Review provider employment agreements and compensation amendments to ensure financial models reflect approved contractual terms.
- Oversee the establishment of standardized provider compensation calculation procedures, controls, approval requirements, and supporting documentation.
- Partner with human resources, legal, payroll, operations, and physician leadership to administer compensation accurately and consistently.
- Oversee the preparation of provider compensation statements and explain calculations clearly to physicians and organizational leadership.
- Model the financial impact of provider recruitment, onboarding, ramp-up periods, schedule changes, leave, compensation guarantees, and contract renewals.
- Monitor provider productivity, clinical capacity, compensation-to-collections ratios, contribution margins, and performance against contractual thresholds.
Ophthalmology Performance Analysis
- Develop financial and operational analyses specific to ophthalmology, optometry, ambulatory surgery centers, optical services, and ancillary testing.
- Monitor key performance indicators such as:
- Patient visits and new-patient volumes
- Surgical and procedural case volumes
- Cataract conversion rates
- Premium intraocular lens and elective-service utilization
- Diagnostic testing utilization
- Provider productivity and capacity
- Revenue per visit, procedure, and surgical case
- Net collections and days in accounts receivable
- Denial, adjustment, and bad-debt rates
- Operating and contribution margins
- Staffing costs and productivity
- Ambulatory surgery center utilization
- Optical capture rate and gross margin
- Analyze profitability by practice, provider, ambulatory surgery center, service line, payer, procedure, and geography.
- Identify opportunities to improve patient access, provider utilization, surgical throughput, staffing efficiency, revenue realization, and operating margins.
- Develop business cases for new physicians, equipment, diagnostic technology, service lines, clinics, and surgery centers.
- Evaluate the financial return on marketing initiatives, referral-development programs, and patient-acquisition strategies.
Executive Reporting and Decision Support
- Develop concise and actionable reporting packages for executive leadership, physician leaders, boards, and investors.
- Present monthly and quarterly financial results, forecasts, performance drivers, risks, and recommended actions.
- Translate financial information into clear operational insights for leaders without extensive finance backgrounds.
- Create executive dashboards and self-service reporting tools that improve visibility into financial and operational performance.
- Partner with regional and practice leaders to develop performance-improvement plans and monitor results.
- Provide financial guidance for pricing, payer strategy, resource allocation, capital deployment, and organizational growth.
- Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the Chief Financial Officer and other senior executives.
Acquisitions and Growth
- Support financial due diligence, quality-of-earnings reviews, valuation modeling, and investment analysis for potential acquisitions and partnerships.
- Develop pro forma financial models for new practices, surgery centers, service lines, affiliations, and joint ventures.
- Evaluate normalized earnings, revenue-cycle performance, provider compensation obligations, capital requirements, and potential synergies.
- Establish financial baselines and performance targets for newly acquired practices.
- Lead the integration of acquired entities into the organization’s budgeting, forecasting, revenue analysis, provider compensation, and reporting processes.
- Track acquisition performance against underwriting assumptions and integration objectives.
- Support purchase accounting and post-transaction financial analyses in partnership with accounting and external advisors.
Data, Systems, and Process Improvement
- Improve the quality, consistency, and accessibility of financial and operational data across the organization.
- Partner with information technology, accounting, revenue cycle management, and operations to integrate information from practice management, electronic health record, payroll, general ledger, data warehouse, and business intelligence systems.
- Establish consistent definitions, reporting standards, and data-governance practices for financial and operational metrics.
- Automate recurring forecasts, provider compensation calculations, management reports, and performance dashboards where appropriate.
- Strengthen financial controls and reduce reliance on manual spreadsheets and disconnected data sources.
- Evaluate and implement FP&A, budgeting, reporting, and analytics tools that support organizational growth.
- Maintain clear documentation of models, calculations, assumptions, data sources, and approval processes.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Comprehensive knowledge of FP&A principles, healthcare finance, revenue recognition, and management reporting.
- Strong understanding of physician-practice economics, reimbursement, revenue-cycle operations, and provider compensation.
- Ability to develop complex financial models and convert large data sets into practical business recommendations.
- Ability to understand provider agreements and translate contractual terms into accurate compensation calculations.
- Strong executive presence and the ability to communicate effectively with physicians, operational leaders, board members, and investors.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and financial systems (ERP systems, BI tools), along with knowledge of SQL or other coding.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to analyze complex data, identify patterns, and develop actionable insights to address financial and operational challenges.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey financial information and work cross-functionally.
- Attention to Detail & Accuracy: Ensuring the reliability and integrity of financial data, models, and reports.
- Business Acumen & Strategic Thinking: Understanding the organization's business models, industry trends, and contributing to long-term financial strategies.
- Knowledge of professional-fee, facility-fee, optical, and elective-service revenue streams.
- Experience with practice management, electronic health record, enterprise resource planning, budgeting, and business intelligence platforms.
- Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, integrations, and de novo growth.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
- Knowledge of revenue cycle management system/practice management system.
- Knowledge of accounting software system, NetSuite.
- Working knowledge of GAAP accounting, financial statements, and cash flow
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
- Minimum of ten (10) years' of experience in financial planning & analysis in a healthcare setting
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
- Minimum of three (3) years FP&A experience in private equity
- Master’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting, healthcare administration, or a related field.
- Experience in ophthalmology, optometry, ambulatory surgery centers, or multispecialty physician-practice management.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF POSITION:
