Job Description

The Job/What You’ll Do:

As Vice President, Corporate Counsel at AssetMark, you will join a highly collaborative legal team and serve as a trusted advisor to leaders across the organization. This is a broad, hands-on role with the opportunity to work on a diverse range of legal and business matters, including complex commercial contracts and client agreements, strategic initiatives, and other corporate matters aligned with your experience and interests.

You’ll partner closely with colleagues across Legal, Compliance, Risk and Information Security, as well as business leaders throughout AssetMark, to provide practical, thoughtful counsel that helps the company move forward. We’re looking for an experienced attorney who brings strong judgment, clear communication, business acumen, and a proactive approach to solving complex issues.

We can consider candidates for this position who are able to accommodate a hybrid work schedule and are close to our Charlotte, NC office.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and providing advice on data license agreements
  • Reviewing and negotiating agreements for enterprise technology solutions
  • Advising the People and Culture team on employment matters, including policy interpretation, organizational initiatives, and multi-state employment-law considerations
  • Provide guidance and oversight to paralegals and other legal support team member and contribute to the development of legal processes, templates, standards, and best practices
  • Policy review
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of commercial contract law and demonstrated ability to draft, review, and negotiate complex business agreements.
  • Working knowledge of technology transactions, including software licensing, SaaS, cloud services, implementation services, support and maintenance, information security, and vendor-management arrangements.
  • Knowledge of legal issues arising from the licensing, acquisition, use, disclosure, and commercialization of data, including intellectual property, confidentiality, privacy, cybersecurity, data-use limitations, and ownership rights.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and the ability to provide practical advice regarding employee relations and workplace matters.
  • Ability to identify, assess, explain, and appropriately balance legal, regulatory, operational, financial, and reputational risks.
  • Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to provide clear, practical, and business-oriented legal advice in situations involving incomplete information or competing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to attorneys, executives, managers, and other business stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships across functions and levels of the organization.
  • Ability to supervise, guide, and review the work of paralegals.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple matters, deadlines, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise appropriate discretion, and recognize when a matter should be escalated.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with standard office, document-management, contract-management, and legal-research technologies.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, or an equivalent legal degree that qualifies the individual for admission to practice law in a United States jurisdiction.
  • Current license to practice law, in good standing, in at least one U.S. state or the District of Columbia.
  • At least five years of relevant legal experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, government agency, or a combination of those settings.
  • Experience in financial services, investment management, financial technology, or another regulated industry is preferred.
  • Experience advising a geographically dispersed employer on multi-state employment-law issues is preferred (and experience with India law, a plus)

Compensation: The Base Salary range for this position is between $190,000-$215,000. This information reflects a base salary range that AssetMark reasonably expects to pay for the position based on a number of factors which may include job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and actual work location. This position will also be eligible for additional variable incentive compensation and competitive benefits.
