Job Description

STV is seeking a Senior Signals Engineer to join our Systems Department in our Boston, MA office. This role is ideal for a seasoned signals engineering professional who brings both deep technical expertise and leadership capability to support complex rail and transit infrastructure programs.


In this position, you will serve as a technical leader and subject matter expert, supporting the planning, design, integration, and delivery of signal systems across major transportation projects. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure safe, reliable, and fully integrated system performance across all phases of project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical lead and subject matter expert for signal systems across project phases including planning, design, construction, testing, and commissioning.

  • Lead and contribute to the design and development of railroad and transit signal systems, ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., AREMA, FRA, APTA).

  • Develop and review engineering deliverables including plans, specifications, technical reports, and cost estimates.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (track, traction power, communications, SCADA, and operations) to deliver integrated system solutions.

  • Perform systems integration, interface management, and verification/validation activities for signal systems.

  • Provide technical oversight during construction, including field reviews, contractor coordination, and resolution of design or installation issues.

  • Lead or support project management activities, including scope definition, scheduling, risk identification, and execution.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers, promoting technical excellence and best practices.

  • Participate in client engagement, technical reviews, and agency coordination as a senior representative of the firm.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in rail/transit signals or systems engineering (consulting or agency environment preferred).

  • Proven experience in signal systems design, construction support, and system integration.

  • Working knowledge of rail transit infrastructure, including signals, communications, traction power, and control systems.

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as AREMA, IEEE, NFPA, and FRA guidelines.

  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholders and disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.

  • Experience supporting major capital programs or complex operating environments.

  • Background working with transit agencies, commuter rail, or freight rail operators.

  • Experience in system testing, commissioning, and cutover planning.

Compensation Range:

$196,118.41 - $224,135.33
