Job Description

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) Department of Family Medicine (DFM) is one of the original academic Family Medicine departments in the country. The Department continues to lead primary care in the 21st century with notable strengths in the bio-psychosocial model, women’s health, global health, and caring for underserved populations. The Highland Family Medicine practice, representing 24,000 patients over 75,000 annual visits, provides access and high-quality care with interprofessional teams. The department is known for its commitment to interprofessional practice and education. DFM educational programs include a nationally known Family Medicine Residency program and three Family Medicine fellowship programs (Maternal child/Advanced Obstetrics, Faculty Development, and Sports Medicine). Besides FM fellows and residents, the department trains other learners including URSMD medical students, Marriage and Family Therapy Interns, Post Master’s Nurse practitioners, and Pharmacy students and residents.

As an academic department of the University of Rochester School of Medicine, DFM is led by Colleen T. Fogarty. MD, MSc, the William Rocktaschel Professor and Chair. The Vice Chair is a faculty member of the DFM, who works closely with the Chair as a member of the senior leadership team. In this role, the Vice Chair reports to the Department Chair. The Vice Chair is responsible for ensuring faculty success in clinical care, education, research and scholarship through provision of leadership in faculty onboarding, assignment of mentors, annual review, promotion and tenure processes, faculty development planning, and periodic departmental review of faculty success and needs.

Essential Responsibilities:

Provides leadership, oversight, and consultation to the DFM Chair about faculty needs and function across the clinical, academic and education missions.

    1. Support individual faculty success and scholarship.
    2. Collaborate with the URSMD Office of Academic Affairs to oversee DFM faculty appointments and promotions.
    3. Collaborate with the Chair on shaping policy and DFM leadership decisions and process.
    4. Foster and model a commitment to a culture of support and high standards, identifying strengths and responding to needs of individual faculty members, with attention to alignment with DFM and wider University of Rochester Medicine missions.
    5. Work with Residency leadership to engage residents who wish to consider future practice in academic Family Medicine.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certification in Family Medicine.
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in New York State.
  • Demonstrated record of progressive leadership experience in an academic medical center or large healthcare system.
  • Evidence of proficiency in clinical practice, medical education, research, and scholarship.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to advancing the department's culture and strategic priorities by fostering a respectful, collaborative environment that supports high-quality care for all patients and educational excellence for all learners.

The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
