Full-time hours | Flexible working | Varied caseload | Up to £70,000 depending on experience
If you’re an experienced Veterinary Surgeon looking to grow and shape a career path that’s tailored to you, this is a great opportunity to join Tilehurst Vets for Pets.
You’ll be part of a welcoming, inclusive team supported by a skilled front-of-house function, two qualified RVNs, two student nurses, and a Veterinary Care Assistant. You’ll also work closely with a Clinical Nurse Practice Manager and an experienced Clinical Director with over 20 years in practice. Their expertise includes Advanced Practitioner status in Emergency and Critical Care, a postgraduate certificate in feline medicine, and ongoing postgraduate training in ophthalmology.
The practice handles a diverse caseload, seeing cats, dogs, and small furries such as rabbits, ferrets, and guinea pigs. Clinical work spans all areas of internal medicine and surgery—from routine procedures like neutering to more complex operations including splenectomies, GDVs, anal gland removals, foreign body surgeries, colonic procedures, caesarean sections, cystotomies, and nephrectomies. The team also performs abdominal and thoracic ultrasound, basic echocardiography, and comprehensive dental work supported by advanced radiography. Ophthalmology is a growing area, with an increasing number of successful cases managed in-house.
There are plans to expand ophthalmology services further, including investment in additional equipment such as a slit lamp and tonometer. The practice is already well-equipped with digital and dental x-ray, ultrasound, and a modern surgical theatre featuring multiparameter monitoring, infusion pumps, and syringe drivers.
The role offers a salary of up to £70,000 FTE, alongside a comprehensive benefits package including pension, healthcare, and paid professional memberships. Additional perks include strong career progression opportunities and lifestyle discounts, such as up to 30% off at Pets at Home. Relocation support is available within the UK and internationally, including visa sponsorship (A+ rated sponsor).
While this is ideally a full-time position, flexible working arrangements can be considered. The practice is currently closed on weekends, with potential plans to introduce Saturday opening in the future.
Tilehurst Vets for Pets is located just west of Reading town centre, close to the River Thames and the South Oxfordshire countryside. Since 1991, when we were a wholesaler with a team of just 15, we’ve been focused on getting better every day. By putting pets before profit, working as a team and taking pride in everything we do, we’ve grown into a 451 store network with more than 8,913 colleagues working in our Stores, Grooming Salons, Distribution Centres and Support Office.
We are the UK’s leading pet specialist, providing pet owners with all their product needs, as well as our Vets for Pets practices and Grooming salons. We support our colleagues to work with pride and passion, to bring honesty and integrity to work every day, and to do it all with a sense of fun and fearlessness. We never shy away from having the important conversations and doing what we say we’ll do.
Our values and behaviours are practiced daily across the business and are what really makes us an enjoyable, exciting place to work. We're always striving to develop and reward our colleagues with an extensive in-house series of training programmes, wellbeing initiatives and a comprehensive benefits package. In 2018 we were delighted to be voted top 5 in the Great Place to Work UK’s Large category.
Our colleagues are central to the success of the business and are fully trained in pet care and dedicated to animal welfare. Pets are central to everything that we do and 93% of colleagues have their own pets too!
